How To Know When It’s Time For Hospice Care With An Aging Parent

February 21, 2015 by Pam Maynard

One of the most difficult choices that any adult child will have to make is determining when they will need to seek out additional help to care for their aging parents. Many feel as if there will never be a perfect time, but there are some questions that you may want to ask yourself that could indicate it is time to consider hospice care for your parent or loved one.

Do They Need Special Medical Care?

While things like running errands for a parent or carrying out some chores around the house can be tiring, no family should ever take any risks when it comes to special medical care. If adult children are incapable of giving an aging parent the medical attention they require it is an immediate red flag that other living arrangements are needed.

Are You Chronically Tired?

Considering hospice care for a parent is as much about improving the quality of life for their family as it is for themselves. When family members and loved ones are being run ragged caring for a parent part-time or full-time, alternative living options could remove quite a bit of stress from the situation and improve relationships.

Are Daily Chores and Habits No Longer Possible At Home?

At some point, everyone is going to lose the dexterity and mobility for rigorous chores such as mowing the lawn or shoveling snow, but what happens when parents can no longer do basic chores? If cleaning up dishes or taking out the trash can no longer be safely done, sanitary issues are soon to follow.

Is Their Diet Deteriorating?

One of the most common signs that an elderly individual may need full-time care or assistance from professionals is if their health is on the decline due to their diet. Even more important than the diet, however, is if the parent cannot keep themselves hydrated which can lead to immediate medical problems.

Are Both of Your Lives Being Negatively Impacted?

Finally, it is important to consider the overall quality of life for any parties involved. If elderly family members are obviously unhappy or unhealthy in their current situation and those around them are having difficulties caring for them then changes must be made.

If you have answered yes to some or all of these questions, it is definitely time to begin considering hospice care. The decision may seem difficult, but giving your parents the assistance they need is one of the most loving gifts a child can offer their aging parents, say the experts at Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care.
