Memories from my childhood that I love the most were made at those big family reunions that everyone attended. I looked forward to each one like it was my own birthday party. We all live far apart, and lead busy lives, so those were the only opportunities to meet and spend some great family time together.
I come from a pretty big family – when we gather on regular Sunday brunches, or small dinner parties, there are at least 15 of us. But when it comes to holidays, birthdays and other big events, all of my closest relatives from all over the country arrive and the number doubles, at least. From little kids to grandparents, everyone look forward to these occasions, and no matter whether it is a birthday party or some other reason, so from my big experience come bunch of ideas and themes that you might use when you are hosting one.
Backyard Fun
As you probably got tired of this winter and cold weather, with the first rays of sunshine, organize something in your backyard. This is probably everyone’s idea of a great family reunion, and to make it perfect, arrange for all of you to play some fun games. They are not just for the kids, as the whole family can enjoy most of them, like sack or three-legged races, or you can play sports, throw a boomerang, or a Frisbee. If there is enough participants, you can organize family Olympics.
Always look after the youngest ones so that they do not get hurt badly, but do not smother them too much and let them have fun too. When the older family members get tired, they can sit, relax, and enjoy chatting and some refreshments, while kids, still full of energy, can continue to run around and play their own little games.
Pool Party
When summer comes, it will be too hot for you all just to hangout in the yard, that is why it is good to organize a pool party. If you do not have one, you can always use inflatable ones that come in different shapes and sizes. Kids are going to love it, but even parents are not going to be able to resist it, and eventually, you will all end up jumping and splashing in the water.
For those who are not so keen on standing all day in the sun, can relax and enjoy the beautiful day on the terrace or gazebo, playing cards and sipping cold drinks. In the other part of the backyard, men could prepare barbecue for everyone, as a male definition of a good party is the one with grilled meat and cold drink.
Formal Dinner
Usually around Christmas, Thanksgiving, Hanukah, or whatever holiday you and your family celebrate, you could organize a more formal dinner party. Think about it. You will set the table in the dinning room, get the fancy plates and silverware out, and prepare the most delicious recipes, or even hire a professional caterer. Everyone in your family will wear smart clothing, formal dresses, even those youngest, naughty ones might agree to wear their little boys suits and look adorable.
Game Night
On the other hand, for a more casual evening event or a family dinner, you can organize a night of fun. There are many games you can play that everyone can take part in, age 6 to 60, like charades or Pictionary – kids absolutely love it! After the dinner, you can rearrange seating and play musical chairs. Remember to mix and match when it comes to teams and players – younger vs. older, boy vs. girls, but be careful because people can get competitive – you do not want to be responsible for any possible family feuds.
No matter which theme or place you chose for your party, the most important thing after all is that everyone is together, because everything comes and goes, but family is forever.
