5 Signs Your Child Can Benefit from Braces

January 27, 2015 by Pam Maynard

As a parent, you obviously want what is best for your son or daughter. You probably know that a beautiful, healthy smile is imperative for your child to maintain good dental health and good self-esteem, but you might not be sure what your child needs to achieve pearly whites that he or she can be proud of. Many parents have a hard time determining if their children need braces, but there are a few signs that you can look for. If you notice any of them, it’s a good idea to take your child to a place like Coquitlam Centre Dental Clinic for an assessment.

1. Crowded Primary Teeth

If your child has started getting his or her adult teeth, it’s a smart idea to look for crowding. Wide gaps shouldn’t be a cause for concern; they basically just show that there is enough room for your child’s primary teeth to grow. Crowding or overlapping teeth, however, are a good indication that your little one will have a crooked smile.

2. Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking isn’t just an unsightly habit; it can also cause damage to your child’s teeth. If your child sucks his or her thumb or used a pacifier longer than necessary, then there’s a chance that you’ll need to talk to a dental professional about the need for braces.

3. Frequent Biting of the Inside of Mouth

It’s not out of the ordinary to bite the inside of your cheek or mouth every now and then, but if your child does it frequently or does it when he or she isn’t eating, then it could be a sign of dental misalignment.

4. Jaw-Related Issues

If your child’s jaw makes strange noises, doesn’t seem to align correctly or seems overly large or small for your child’s mouth and overall size, then there could be dental misalignment issues later on. Don’t assume that this is just a part of growing unless your child’s dentist tells you otherwise.

5. Primary Teeth That Don’t Meet Properly

If your child’s adult teeth don’t meet properly or don’t meet at all, then there’s a strong chance that this problem will continue into adulthood. Fortunately, braces can help with this misalignment issue.

There are a few different signs that you can look for to determine if your child needs braces, but the smartest idea can be to talk to your child’s dentist. If you haven’t yet scheduled an appointment for your little one, consider doing so. Then, you can get a professional opinion on whether or not your child needs braces.
