How to Resuscitate any Plain Jane Wall in the House

January 1, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Learn how to revive your wall decor!

If you moved into your home, hung a few pictures and moved on, your wall décor has likely started to look sad over the years. Perhaps you have some glaring blank walls that act as a black hole in the room—making things look bland a boring. If your wall décor needs a little revival, there are some easy projects that will turn it around in a hurry. Read on for some inspiration to get you on the road to stylish wall décor, and put those plain Jane walls to bed.

 revive your wall decor

Turn Back Time

One style that will add class to any room is the vintage look—this is why it is so popular for wall décor. Antique dishes and plates, faded photos of your ancestors, and cross-stitch items can invoke a vintage look that is appealing rather than run-down. You can also look for old books with interesting, art-quality pictures or illustrations. Old atlases provide both visual appeal and historical interest. Picture books featuring birds, flowers, architecture and other artistic subjects will yield dozens of possible choices. You can mat and frame these illustrations to add a subtle vintage air to a wall in need of style help.

Canvas Prints

Too add texture and dimension to the wall décor, skip the frame and hang an attractive canvas directly on the wall. Since canvas prints project from the wall, they keep your décor from looking to flat and bland. You can create a focal point in any room by putting together a personalized photo canvas collage of family photos, vacation pictures, or even your favorite quote. Whether you use images, words, or a reproduction of your favorite art piece, canvas prints will help you avoid the one-dimensional monotony that tends to happen when procuring wall décor. .

Create a Memorabilia Display

Wall décor will add a lot of personality to your home when you customize the items so they reflect your interests, accomplishments, or life events. Diplomas and certificates can be framed and hung along with sports pennants, or you can even frame an old t-shirt to put on display. Awards, school pictures, shadow boxes, and original artwork are all items that will add to the story you depict on the wall. You can mix and match the items you display—don’t restrict yourself to frames pictures and documents. This display adds an extra touch of personality to the home, and allows you to express your family’s story as well.

Let Decorative Frames be the Focal Point

If you don’t want to cover the walls with family photos or memorabilia, you can achieve a simple yet stylish look by finding decorative frames. When you find vintage, chunky, or colorful frames, you can have more simple subject matter and let the frames do the talking. Flea markets and second hand shops always have stacks of old frames for sale. Look for frames with interesting texture and intricate details—you can always spray paint the frame a different color if it is scratched or faded. Purchase a good variety of styles and sizes to create further aesthetic appeal. You can put simple art, or even mirror glass within the frames to create a simple look that adds style but doesn’t overwhelm the look of the room.

Wall décor is a great way to individualize a room using highly personal, meaningful objects that reflect the members of the household and their interests. Think beyond the norm, and help breathe a little life back into your home décor.  Creating your own gallery wall will instantly infuse your personality to the room, and any blank wall will transform into a stylish work of art.
