5 Keys to Better Managing Your Time While Away at School

December 18, 2014 by Pam Maynard

There are many ways to learn to be efficient to manage time, such as what’s taught in Masters in Safety and other similar programs. It’s important to take steps to manage time wisely; otherwise, students find that they are not able to spend time where it is needed. Some assignments require more time than others. Tests need to be studied for. Depending upon the time in between classes and other time constraints, it can be difficult to get assignments done if a schedule is not decided upon.

Focus
Remaining efficient means that students must focus. Focusing means that students must keep at the forefront of their minds all the things that are important. This can be done by leaving oneself a voice recording or a “to do” list. Keep lists according to categories. For instance, keep a shopping list. Keep a list for bills. Keep a list for school assignments. Regularly update lists to keep on-top of things.
Journal
When students are bogged down with stress, they are less likely to think clearly. Getting issues out on paper helps to relieve stress and get the brain thinking clearly by listing out anything that it is thinking. The brain tends to kick around thoughts and tasks repeatedly until they’re written down. Journaling can be done in the morning before tasks are started, or journaling can be done at night before bedtime to clear out thoughts to help go to sleep.
Prioritize
Write down all assignments and upcoming tests. Write them down on the calendar on their due dates. It may be wise to use black ink for this. Place the date that these assignments must be completed by on the calendar. Write these dates down in red ink to mark as urgent matters. Write in blue or green ink the dates that the projects should be started on. Think ahead, and begin doing work ahead of time if time is allowed.
Hard Things First
Tackle hard things first. This accomplishes two things. For starters, they will be done, and because they are done first, they will not continue to give stress to the student. In life, this time management technique carries across all parts of life.
Rewards
Make time for fun. As much as studying is important, the brain needs a break. People who don’t make time for fun experience burn-out. Burn-out prohibits productivity.
Explore the ideas listed above and explore others according to individual needs. Everything is possible. Students need to find their niche, and they will find that their schedules move easily and efficiently along. More importantly, they will successfully survive school.
