Winter is here and up here in New England, that means snow, LOTS of snow. Just 2 days ago we got over 15 inches of heavy, wet snow. We had so much, many people were without power for over 36 hours. So what kind of fun can you and/or your kids have outside or inside- away from all those electronics that can’t be used with the power out? There are so many activities to do that don’t involve TV, Internet or Smart Phones.
My son and I came up with a fun list of things to do:
1. Do you want to build a Snowman?
This is a family favorite at many houses in New England. If you haven’t ever built a snowman, you’re missing out. Of course, you have to have the wet, heavy snow. The light snow doesn’t work. If you can’t pack it into a snowball, you can’t make a snowman either. Be sure to have sticks for arms, rocks or something dark for eyes, a carrot nose and something for the mouth. You can always dress up your snowman with a scarf, hat, gloves, boots and more!
Be careful not to make the balls too big, you won’t be able to stack them up because they will be too heavy!
2. Make Snow Angels
This activity doesn’t require any materials or any talent either! Just lay down in the snow on your back and raise your arms above and below your head. Move your legs out and back in. Be careful getting up so as not to ruin your creation.
3. Make colored snow
No, not just yellow snow. You can make any color snow with Sno-Art Kits. Color and decorate snow by mixing warm water with the Sno-Marker color packet. My son loves to write things in the snow. He also decorates his snowman with different colors too.

4. Make a Snow fort and tunnel
This was always one of my favorite activities when I was growing up. It’s like making a sand castle but with snow and no sunny warm weather. Pick a good spot, one where your dad won’t plow it over next time it snows. Just pack the snow into the molds and turn them upside down. Use the bricks to make a wall to hide behind so you don’t get hit by snowballs. You can use the brick molds to help you dig out a tunnel and then pack some bricks in to reinforce the sides.
By the end of the winter, we have snowbanks that are over 20 feet high. It’s fun to make tunnels through the snow banks! You can make a whole city in our big snow banks!

5. Build a fort inside, be sure to bring candles, flashlights, board games and books.
This is always a family favorite at our house. We used to take advantage of the bunk beds and drape comforters and blankets to make a cozy fort. Grab some flashlights and books and some snacks too. We would read book after book until the lights came back on. Sometimes, when the lights came on, we still stayed in the fort because it was so much fun!
