What to Look for in a Doctor for Your First Pregnancy

November 26, 2014 by Pam Maynard

You need to understand that the way you handle your pregnancy influences the outcome of the delivery, so finding the right doctor to treat you throughout your pregnancy is essential. How do you find the right doctor for this vital period? Here are some few pointers to consider.

Pregnancy- mdr

Qualifications and Credentials

It is important that you find a doctor that is qualified to manage your pregnancy. Don’t  just believe word of mouth when it comes to certification – feel free to ask to see a physician’s certifications firsthand before they treat you, or you can sometimes find them listed on sites like Healthgrades.com As you review a physician’s credentials on sites like vitals.com, don’t forget to check for board certification.  Board Certification demonstrates a physician’s exceptional expertise in a particular specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice.

Relevant Experience

When possible, try to select a physician that has been treating pregnant women for several years versus right out of medical school, especially if you experience complications during pregnancy or if your OB/GYN refers you to a high risk obstetrician. For instance, you might be referred to a high risk obstetrician if you suffer from conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or a number of other health issues. An experienced high risk obstetrician can help you manage these conditions and make sure you and your baby are safe every step of the way, according to Dr. Gilbert Webb.

Accepted Insurance

Before scheduling an appointment with a new physician, you’ll want to verify that the practice accepts your health insurance, or else you may end up with some hefty bills. Some of the most common insurance companies include Anthem, Cigna, Humana, Iowa Medicaid, United Healthcare, and Missouri Medicaid.  You can either ask the doctor’s office directly, or you can call your insurance carrier or search for the physician’s name on their website, to see if they are covered under your plan.

In summary, you need to understand that being pregnant is just as important as delivery, so you want to make sure you do some research in advance.
