Tips for a Successful Sunday Drive

October 24, 2014 by Pam Maynard

When was the last time you and your family headed out for a good ‘ole fashioned Sunday drive?  Back in the 1920-30s these afternoon trips of leisure promoted exploration and inspired States to develop some of our country’s most beautiful parkways and scenic routes.  In Illinois alone, you can enjoy a journey along the historic Route 66, Illinois River Road, Great River Road, Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway, and Spoon River Valley Scenic Drive.  I don’t know if any other state can boast of so many scenic byways and drives – we should be enjoying them!  Take a look at our  tips for a successful Sunday Drive below:

I. Plan Ahead

Break tradition and plan your route to be sure you don’t miss out on a spectacular feature along the way.  When the Sunday Drive began it was much easier to find open roads and spaces to enjoy than it is today.  You don’t want to accidentally stumble upon a town with traffic that will hinder your experience.  Plan your route to be sure it will run smoothly(pun intended).

II.  Leave Devices at Home

Your child may automatically grab their favorite handheld device and headphones in an attempt to “not be bored” along the way.  Unless you have a young child who is prone to automobile meltdowns, leave the devices behind and make it a new rule during short leisure trips.
