With Christmas on the horizon my son has been asking a lot of questions about gifts. While it isn’t anything new, I think the topic is pretty common among all children and families right now, but my son has become especially interested in “What is the BEST gift you received as a child?”. So much so, that anytime the topic of “gifts” comes up, this seems to be his go-to question. It got me thinking… “What was the best gift?” because I have truly never given it much thought.
I grew up in a family with little wants – I didn’t want, because I knew I wouldn’t get, and it never bothered me. I knew that was the way it was and that was “okay”. I didn’t play with Barbie, the Atari might as well have been a mystical creature, and what was all the fuss about with those Hippos? I had my books, books were good, and I still love them.
The year my siblings and I received the Simon as our Christmas gift was probably the closest I came to having an awesome Christmas. Anyone who had a Simon knows just how amazing this gift was. It was electronic, scientific, and was great family competition – what more could five kids ask for?
Some of my fondest childhood memories commenced while sitting around that circle taking on one of my brothers or sisters. While I could try to explain Simon to my son, he is likely to be pretty confused. I may need to place one under the tree this year so he can get a first-hand view of what the best gift I received as a child was. I just checked Walmart.com and confirmed that they still sell them – awesome!
While I was over there, I also learned that Walmart is having their Holiday Toyland Event. Toyland is an opportunity for families to experience the latest toys before making their Christmas list. All you have to do is find a participating store by CLICKING HERE, and head down to your nearest participating store. While browsing, look for the life size Buddy the Elf cutouts and Walmart Holiday Helpers. They will show you how you can become an official toy tester! My guy and I will be at our store on November 15th! He is most excited to be an Official Tester for the Hasbro Transformers Mega Flip Bumble Bee! (We love Bumble Bee!)
