Join Project Sunlight and #ShareAMeal

October 14, 2014 by Pam Maynard

We learned earlier this month that those in need can be anyone.  It can be someone we work with, your child’s best friend, or that mom you look up to in your Mommy group.  Last year I read a blog post from a mom who was a teacher. She was struggling to tell her fellow educators that those cans they were collecting in the school’s food drive, would likely end up on her own table…

What does the face of childhood hunger in America look like today?

Do you know what childhood hunger looks like?

1 in 5 children don’t know where their next meal will come from!

Do you know that there are children in America who are thankful to attend public school because they know they will get a meal (or two) that day?  Yes, there are children who strive to never miss day of class because they relate school with food. School only occurs one hundred and eighty days – where do they eat for the other half of the year? Where do they eat dinner?

For those who are struggling, it is hard to admit they need help.  The moment the words come out, or they take that step to accept help from others, there is an immediate release of fear and relief altogether.  Relief, because Lord knows they needed it.  Fear, because they worry that others will judge or think they are a failure.  By actively seeking to develop a relationship with local families in need, you can take that fear away and replace it with love.

Download the Unilever project Sunlight Share a Meal Tool Kit

The Share a Meal Tool Kit shows you several thoughtful ways you can help a family in your community. Their ideas move beyond the traditional and show you how to personally assist a family. Take a look at a few of the suggestions you will find in the Tool Kit:

  1. Invite a family for dinner and be sure to prepare too much to send home the “best overs”
  2. Setup a child snack bar at the kids’ table where children are able to select to-go snacks to take with them in a bag they decorate themselves.
  3. Send an extra packed lunch along with your child to give to another at school.
  4. Host a potluck in your park.
  5. Host a virtual food drive.

Beyond providing you with some fantastic ideas, the Tool Kit also spells out several ways you can go about promoting your efforts within your community. You can say, the Unilever project Sunlight Share a Meal Tool Kit is a MUST to get you started! Download it HERE.

Mom Does Reviews is proud to be part of the #ShareaMeal100 who will be spreading word about project Sunlights #ShareaMeal campaign.  Please watch and share the documentary above so you can let everyone know what the face of childhood hunger looks like!
