Senior Head Start: How to Spread Out that Last High School Year

October 8, 2014 by Pam Maynard

Your senior year is the most exciting year of your high school life. You’re almost done with school, possibly getting ready to move out, and you’re feeling on top of the world. But, being a senior also means planning out your future. If you want to prepare yourself so you’re not doing everything last minute, listen up!
Take the ACT/SAT
If you haven’t done so already, take the ACT or SAT. If you’re unsure which test you should be taking, try researching the college you’re looking at attending. In their application they will usually tell you which test they require scores for. Don’t freak out about these tests! You’ve been “studying” 12 years for them. If you’d like a refresher course, prep classes are usually offered locally. You can also hire a tutor or even use computer programs to test your knowledge.

Fill Out Those College Applications

Senior year is the year to figure out what college you’ll be attending. Most schools allow early application submissions (around the end of summer break). Try submitting applications to your picks early on so you have more time to prepare after gaining admittance. It’s also important to have a back up. You know which school is your number one, but applying to a few back up schools will make the whole process less stressful in case anything goes awry. The applications can be super long and tedious, but trust yourself and remember this is an investment for the future.

Senior Pictures
Senior pictures mean being a model for a day! You get to set up a day with your very own photographer and it’s a great time to show the world the real you. Try scheduling your pictures before second semester. Usually your school will send you a due date for pictures in the mail before the school year starts. Getting this scheduled and out of the way ASAP will just be a burden off of your shoulders.

Don’t Let Your Grades Slip
When it’s your last year, and you can feel the tension easing, it’s easy to slack off. Senioritis is highly contagious, and you can’t let yourself become infected. While it’s unlikely your college will revoke your admittance based on last semester grades, you’ve worked too hard to risk it. Try to keep a good study schedule and remember to put some breaks so you don’t feel overwhelmed.

See Your Doctor
Once senior year is over, you might no longer be living at home or in your hometown. Before you graduate this year, try making appointments to see your family doctor, eye doctor, and your Calgary dentist. If you’re moving away, it will be a lot harder to go to these appointments. Especially if you don’t have a car or if you’re moving out of state. Sierra Dental recommend getting these done over your senior year, since it will save you the trouble of coming home right after you’ve moved because you forgot.

Senior year is a great time to just enjoy being in high school! Pass the time with good friends, get dressed up for the big dance, go to as many school events as you can, and make memories to last a lifetime.
