Easter is just around the corner and it’s always nice to make the event a little more family friendly than just scoffing on chocolate eggs! The past week has been spent researching fun activities to do with the kids and I can hardly wait to see which ones will go down best; these don’t have to be done for Easter, just can easily be adapted to fit the holiday spirit and (hopefully) provide a good few hours of entertainment at little or no cost, especially if you make use of coupon codes! Egg blowing is a subtle art that, with a little bit of help, can leave your children with perfect empty eggshells to decorate and paint. The tricky part is using a paperclip, pin or needle to pierce two holes in the eggshell, through which you can gently blow out the yolk/white – obviously with younger children it is probably best for you to do it for them! Once you have gently blown out the insides, you are left with an intact shell that can be painted or drawn on, to create wonderful egg designs that, with care, can be kept indefinitely!
My kids also love Easter egg hunts, and a great idea is to make bunny themed buckets or baskets for them to put these eggs in. Starting with a small toy bucket, customize it with foam or cardboard to make ears, add some novelty eyes, and you have a homemade Easter toy that can be easily made with materials from your local art supply store. The ideas we have are for Easter bunnies, but the idea can be changed for whatever event is best.
Hand and potato prints are also fun Easter themed crafts; either print a potato by dipping it into paint, or trace yours or your child’s hand to create the basic outline of any number of things! These can be added too with feathers, glitter or paint to create a fun craft. The outline of your hand makes a great template for an Easter chick, or two fingers can create the start of an Easter rabbit. Experiment and see what you can come up with! Cutting eye and mouth holes in a paper plate and adding a piece of string or elastic to the back can create a fun mask. You and your children can customhouse them to look like whatever they want to look like; rabbits, chicks, eggs or hearts, anything can be made with some cardboard, glue, glitter and colored crayons.
