Planning Tips to Ensure a Smooth Recovery from Cosmetic Surgery

August 11, 2014 by Pam Maynard

Having children brings joy into your life, but it can also take a toll on a mother’s body. Many women are now choosing to get the “mommy makeover,” which helps restore the body to its pre-childbirth state. Are you thinking about taking the plunge and getting a breast augmentation or tummy tuck? It’s important to think carefully about what’s involved in cosmetic surgery, including the recovery period. With small children running about, you’ll need to carve out time for the rest that your body needs. Keep the following tips in mind to ensure that your recovery period runs smoothly, leaving you with the results you want!

1. Do your research.

Before you go in for surgery, start thinking about the logistical issues that could arise. Learn more about breast augmentation and what it entails, or the surgery of your choice. After the surgery, who will watch your children? How will you get home? Ask your doctor when you can expect to be able to drive, exercise, and go back to work so you have some idea of what to expect. You should also ask for a list of substances that might hinder your recovery. Something as common as aspirin could interfere with the body’s healing process.

2. Quit smoking.

No matter what type of procedure you’re having, your doctor will advise you to quit smoking before the surgery. It’s highly recommended to quit at least 20 days before and after the procedure, because substances like carbon monoxide and nicotine found in cigarettes can restrict blood flow in the body. This can cause complications during and after surgery.

3. Make childcare arrangements.

The first thing on most moms’ minds is what to do with the children during this recovery process. In most cases, you’ll be able to resume your caretaking duties within a few days, but it’s helpful to enlist the help of friends or family members to babysit for you so that you can relax.

4. Ensure that you have a support network.

Similarly, make sure that you have someone to drive you to and from your surgery as well as a loved one to sit with you during the first day or two after the procedure. You may have limited movement during this time.

5. Move slowly at first.

In most cases, vigorous exercise is not recommended for the first three months after surgery. Yet light physical activity can help speed the recovery process by improving blood flow and preventing blood clot formation. Take gentle walks with your children when you’re up to it, to boost energy and relieve stress.

6. Be honest about your medical history.

Finally, be honest with your doctor! Always mention any medications or health supplements you’re taking, even if they’re all-natural. These may have negative interactions with drugs used during and after the procedure.

With a bit of time and care, you can be better prepared for the important recovery period after a mommy makeover and allow your body to bounce back in better shape than ever!
