I am SUPER-EXCITED to share this Summer Reading Challenge with all of YOU! My whole family loves to read and even though my son is 11, we still read EVERY night at bedtime! Of course, he usually reads to us, but we love sharing the adventures that come alive off the pages of our favorite books.
Many parents are concerned about the Summer Loss- the things kids may forget over the summer when they don’t step foot into a classroom for 10 weeks. But, the good news is that by participating in the Summer Reading Challenge, kids won’t lose any learning before the summer is over.
- Studies show that early and sustained summer learning opportunities improve academic outcomes for youth and lead to higher graduation rates and better preparation for college.
- Ensuring easy and continued access to books for summer reading is one potential strategy for addressing summer reading setback.
- 92% of kids say they are more likely to finish reading a book that they pick out themselves.
The 2014 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is an exciting free, online reading program that motivates children to read throughout the summer, when school is out. Now in its 8th year, the program challenges kids (ages 5-14) to log their reading minutes, to earn fun rewards, and help a new world record for summer reading. Parents and teachers can register children (grades K-8) at scholastic.com/summer and children can log minutes now through September 5th, 2014.
This year’s Summer Reading theme is Reading Under the Stars, and is powered by EVEREADY®, the flashlight and household battery company, to encourage families to discover new and fun ways to explore reading outside this summer.

What’s New for Kids for Summer 2014:
- Kids will read around the galaxy this summer! As they log their minutes online, constellations will light up and unlock fun facts.
- Common Core-aligned activities. Kids can earn virtual prizes when they complete reading quizzes, complex text challenges, word challenges, etc.
- New book lists, including a “Reading Under the Stars”-themed list with books about space, stars, astronomy, camping, wilderness, and spooky stories to read by a campfire.
- Monthly sweepstakes and bonus reading challenges
