Got Kids? 4 Ways to Make Sure They Don’t Leave the House Without You Knowing

June 9, 2014 by Pam Maynard

Raising kids involves a series of trial-and-error attempts to set ground rules and establish boundaries, but it’s not always easy to get everyone on board. If you have kids who show signs of running away or who have proven their inability to sit still at night, then this article is for you. Here are four great ways to ensure that your kids never leave the house without your permission.

1. Put It in Writing

When confronted with a sneaking out attempt, some teens attempt to swindle parents by claiming that they had already mentioned they were going out. To combat this defense, establish a system in which everyone in the family writes down their plans on a dry erase board or calendar. Doing so will prevent your teen from claiming ignorance, and you’ll also get a better handle on everyone’s routine plans so that you pinpoint discrepancies.

2. Call for Backup

Establish your own miniature version of a neighborhood watch by enlisting the help of your kids’ friends’ parents and other neighbors. Exchange phone numbers and addresses along with descriptions of your kids to ensure that everyone in your vicinity knows who to watch out for. Over time, your network could prove beneficial if your teens suddenly decide to buck curfew or attempt to use their friends’ parents as decoy guardians.

3. Track Technology Use

Today’s technology makes it easy to plan an after-hours rendezvous. Stay one step ahead of your kids by tracking their electronic activities. Several software programs exist that enable parents to set website restrictions, monitor keystrokes and track important data over time. You can’t be too careful when it comes to child safety, and tracking your kids’ online whereabouts will help protect them while keeping them under your roof.

4. Bolster Home Security

If you have kids who frequently sneak out at night, then consider boosting your home security with yard sensors and digital keypads that prevent unrestricted access. A good, old-fashioned lock on the windows might do the trick, but kids will start to feel trapped and may rebel if faced with this extreme measure. Installing high-tech security could be a better long-term solution. You may also consider investing in heavier doors and windows from places like Comfort King Ltd. Heavier doors and windows make it harder and less enticing for your kids to leave without your permission.

From rebellious teens to kids who just want to buck the rules every once in a while, as kids age they tend to start pushing the limits you set long ago. Set firm guidelines and make sure that your kids know that you mean business when it comes to repercussions. Keeping your kids safe whether you’re at home or not supersedes any concern for their individual privacy at this age.
