Fire Safety: How to Involve the Whole Family in Preparedness

May 7, 2014 by Pam Maynard

For families who want to increase their safety in the event of a fire, there are several ways to involve each member of the household and take the necessary steps to be proactive in case of a fire. Home fires can commonly occur due to electrical problems, or when cooking, making it important to practice safety and reduce the risk of damage or injury to you and your family. By stressing the importance of family safety and working together, it’s possible to get each family member involved.

Fire Safety How to Involve the Whole Family in Preparedness

Discuss an Escape Route

Discuss different escape routes that can be used from various points within the home through windows and doors. Use diagrams to illustrate the route each person should take and a meeting location outside of the home. Agree on a signal that will be used in case of a fire that alerts each family member. Opt for a bell, fog horn, or whistle that can easily be heard throughout the property. According to a Kitchen Simeson LLP lawyer from Oshawa, an escape ladder should be installed in a central location on the second or third story of a home to provide access to the outside property. Point out windows that have access to other roofs or fences for points of escape.

Practice Using a Fire Extinguisher

Both children and adults should know where each fire extinguisher is located in the home and how to operate one. At least one fire extinguisher should be available on each level and within reach. The extinguisher should also be checked for proper air pressure once a month.

Designate an Adult to Evacuate Children

For young children that may be too young to escape, it’s important to designate a teenager or adult in the home who is responsible for evacuating the children, elderly, or any pets who need assistance. Go over how to help them out and which are the fastest exits from their point in the home.

Post Emergency Numbers

In the event of a fire, make emergency numbers readily available for both adults and children near each phone in the home. The phone numbers should be programmed into each telephone for a quick way of making the call. Teach children how to call each number and practice rehearsing several times during drills.

Fire safety should be practiced and reviewed at least once a year to remind the family members the different steps that should be taken. With enough practice drills and reviews, it will ensure that every member in the home is educated on fire safety and can be prepared should a fire occur on the property.
