In the Kitchen: Five Ways to Save at Mealtime

February 14, 2014 by Pam Maynard

Every family has a budget. Some family budgets are tighter than others, but it’s safe to say that the majority of people can’t just spend money whenever, or wherever they wish. Every family has to eat too, and it can become expensive to feed all those hungry mouths. Fortunately, there are several simple ways to cut down on food expenses, and many of these ways will also help your family eat more healthy.

In the Kitchen Five Ways to Save at Mealtime

Avoid Cheap Fast Food

Even value meals can become pricey when you purchase enough food from them to feed your entire family. Furthermore, most families that eat fast food will purchase soft drinks. These expensive and unnecessary additions to your food budget add a lot of calories, and no nutrition.

Prepare Meals in the Slow Cooker

Meals made with fresh ingredients tend to be less expensive to prepare than heat-and-eat options from your grocer’s freezer. Cut down on prep time and make sure dinner is ready when your family gets home in the evening by choosing simple slow-cooker recipes that can be prepared quickly in the morning, and be fully cooked by evening.

Serve Simple Soups

Soup is filling, and stretches a long way. Especially during cold weather, soup is a great way to feed the family. Many can be prepared in the slow cooker, or you can take a weekend to prepare several different soups that can then be frozen for use in lunches later.

Take Snacks on the Go

Buying food out, or grabbing a snack at the local quick-mart is one of the biggest money pits into which a busy family can fall. Instead, prepare homemade trail mix, or other healthy snacks that can be packed in baggies and taken along to school, work, or sports practice.

Don’t Buy Soda Pop

Coke, Pepsi, and even generic bottled soft drinks are expensive, and full of empty calories. Diet sodas that don’t include sugar still contain caffeine and other harmful chemicals. Invest in water bottles for the entire family to carry around during the day. At home, serve options such as tea, water, and milk. For a special treat, Kool-Aid or similar drink mixes are an affordable alternative to soda pop.

Shop Using Circulars

Different foods go on sale at different times of the year. Plan your family’s meals around foods that are on sale. In the winter, you can generally get fresh citrus and pineapple at lower prices than you can in warmer months. When meat goes on sale, stock up for future use.

When money is tight there are most always ways to cut back and save. By using these tips, you should be able to reduce your monthly grocery bill considerably. Sometimes, a family needs a little extra help getting ahead. When unexpected expenses threaten your ability to feed your family, consider applying for loans in the Dallas area. Companies such as Power Finance will be happy to help you learn what loans will best meet your family’s needs.
