Barbie™ stars as Lumina™, a mermaid who dreams of being a princess. As long as she can remember, she’s had a magical power that makes pearls dance and glow! Lumina™, and her best friend Kuda, a pink seahorse, embark on an adventure to a majestic mer-kingdom. There, she uses her powers to help her friends prepare for the Royal Ball. Lumina™ then discovers that her magical pearls are the key to unlocking her true destiny and ultimately saving the kingdom.
My girls and I were recently able to sneak away for an early afternoon showing of Barbie’s latest movie, The Pearl Princess. My girls are ages one, eight, and twelve and each had a separate opinion of the movie.
The vibrant colors and lively songs captivated the attention of our wee one. As tired as she was, she remained alert for he majority of the show. I think she enjoyed the music and sea life the most.
While my oldest daughter (age 12) attempted to appear less involved with the movie, I observed her paying more attention to the story than she would admit on her own. She appeared to enjoy the story more than the music. During the musical features of the movie she showed less enthusiasm for joining us.
My middle daughter, greatly enjoyed the movie. She liked the clothing and hair styles Lumina created throughout the movie. Lumina’s pearl powers allowed her to transform other characters’ and her own hair and clothing in beautiful ways. Sweet Girl talked about how amazing it would be to style hair that easily.
What Did Mama Think?
I think the colors used in the film were amazing! The main song of the film was very modern, much like mainstream pop music. This was very appealing to the girls. Sweet Girl mentioned wanting the MP3 version of the song downloaded to her music collection.
The story was simple with some standard twists. While I think most parents can figure out where the plot will run quite quickly, my Sweet Girl was able to stay on her toes and be surprised.
The movie was very cute and my daughter is looking forward to seeing the latest dolls that follow the film’s debut. I didn’t mind watching it with my daughters and I think they ALL enjoyed it too!
Barbie: The Pearl Princess is in select theaters throughout the month of February, and will be available on DVD March 11th.
