Tips for Caring for Area Rugs

February 9, 2014 by Pam Maynard

Area rugs are a great way to add softness and warmth to your space. They help in personalizing your home and styling the rooms according to your taste. You don’t have to change the paint or even carpeting to style up your space according to your likes and dislikes. They can be easily rolled up and removed if you need some change in the room.

Tips for Caring for Area Rugs

Do you feel like your area rugs take a lot of accidental abuse? Do they wear out and get dirty far too quickly?

This can detract from the beauty of your home and it can even make you feel rather ashamed of the state of the house when people come over to visit. These tips can help you care for them and keep them looking as beautiful as they should.

1. Do not let pets sleep on the rugs.

Given the choice between sleeping on a rug and sleeping on a hardwood floor, your pet is always going to choose the rug. This can really make it carry an odor and pet hair can get into the fabric.

Give your dog his own pet bed that he can sleep on instead, giving him an option that he will pick over the rug.  Some dog beds are thicker and fluffier than any rug could be!

2. Clean the rugs frequently.

It is also a good idea to perform rug cleaning on a consistent basis, before things get to be too bad. The longer you wait, the harder it is going to be to clean; it can even get so bad that it is all but impossible to make it look like new on your own. Cleaning frequently makes the job far faster and far easier.

3. Pick colors that hide stains.

If you haven’t bought a rug yet, you may want to pick colors like brown or black, which hide stains. This way, even if you cannot get them out, they are not so obvious.  Patterns will also help hide stains and dirt.
