Six Easy Fixes if your Child’s Favorite Toy Breaks

January 25, 2014 by Pam Maynard

Well loved toys often come to the point where they need to be maintained or fixed. Don’t panic if your child’s favorite plaything breaks. In most cases, they can be fixed! Fixing toys can not only save your child from the frustration of losing their favorite play thing, but it can also save you money on replacing toys. Read on for some simple tips that will help everyone to stay calm and to remedy the unfortunate situation at hand.

Six Easy Fixes if your Child's Favorite Toy Breaks

1. Always Check the Batteries First

Perhaps the toy is not actually broken, but the batteries are simply worn out. Try changing or charging the batteries before moving on to any more advanced steps. Sometimes, a new set of batteries is all it takes.

2. Get out the Sewing Kit

If the family pet put a rip in your child’s favorite plush toy, or if love eventually wore part of the surface thin, consult your sewing basket. If you need extra polyfill, go to a craft store. If you do not own a sewing basket or know how to sew, consult a friend or family member. Many members of senior citizen centers also know how to sew and may welcome the chance to give a child’s favorite toy some love and care. While you are at it, run the vacuum hose attachment over the plush toy to remove dust and other allergens. Some plush toys are even machine washable.

3. Find the Glue Gun

Before you toss a broken plastic toy, try fixing it with the super strength of a glue gun. If you do not already own one, they can commonly be found in craft stores. They are easy to use, but also easy to burn yourself on. Advise children to keep a safe distance. Other special craft glues like j-b weld are a great choice for plastic toys. Find a glue that works well and won’t just come unglued with extended play.

4. Consult the Company Website

Some companies selling popular power toys offer online how to videos and troubleshooting guides. Often times, other parents have also encountered the same issues with a specific toy and you might be able to find a guide to fixing it on YouTube or on a blog. If the toy is pretty new, it’s a good idea to also call their service number,  the toy might still be under warranty

5. Order Replacement Parts

Even rugged toys sometimes need to have parts replaced. If a pricier toy like a Power Wheels breaks down, you don’t just want to throw it away. You can search the service center for Power Wheels and order replacement parts at www.mendingshed.com. Search online or talk to a live representative to find special sales or coupon codes you might be able to use.

6. Get Some Hot Water Ready

Sometimes action figures get bent limbs. If this is the case with your child’s toys, simply use hot water to bend the figure back into proper shape. Be sure to only hold the toy in the water for about one minute.

Children love their toys. It is worth it to at least attempt to remedy a toy calamity before tossing it aside. Fixing toys can save you the money on purchasing new replacements. Your child will thank you, and you will be making a conscientious, budget friendly, and earth friendly choice.
