Lord Teach Us to Pray, Book Tour and Giveaway ends 3/15

March 7, 2012 by Pam Maynard

I recently received a copy of Lord Teach Us To Pray by Alexander Whyte from Kingsley Press. Lord, Teach Us to Pray is probably the finest single book of sermons on prayer by any Evangelical preacher. –Warren Wiersbe About the Book

Dr. Alexander Whyte (1836-1921) was widely acknowledged to be the greatest Scottish preacher of his day. He was a mighty pulpit orator who thundered against sin, awakening the consciences of his hearers, and then gently leading them to the Savior. He was also a great teacher, who would teach a class of around 500 young men after Sunday night service, instructing them in the way of the Lord more perfectly. In the later part of Dr. Whyte’s ministry, one of his pet topics was prayer. Luke 11:1 was a favorite text and was often used in conjunction with another text as the basis for his sermons on this subject. The sermons printed here represent only a few of the many delivered. But each one is deeply instructive, powerful and convicting.

Review by Mom Does Reviews:

I would like to thank Kingsley Press for allowing me to review this powerful book!  Prayer has always been something I struggle with.  If only I could pray like a child again.  My 9 year-old prays like he is talking to his friends at school.  Don’t we all long to have the faith of a child?  When I teach Children’s Church, I encourage each child to share something they want to pray about.  Then we all take turns praying.  That is my favorite part of Children’s Church, listening to the imagination of the children as they talk to God.

Dr. Alexander Whyte, being a great servant of God, is known for two wonderful gifts:  Imagination and Dramatic instinct.  After reading, Lord Teach us to Pray, I wanted to share my favorite chapter with you.   Chapter 20, Imagination in Prayer, Dr Whyte shows us God’s imagination that we can see in creation around us.  He says, “Imagination is nothing less than the noblest intellectual attribute of the human mind.”  He quotes Pascal also: “Imagination, says Pascal, creates all the beauty and all the justice and all the happiness that is in the heart of man.”  Dr. Whyte reminds us to think like a child and speak like a child when we are praying.  That is something that is so hard for many of us to do.

He also tells us the to open our Bibles to the Sermon on the Mount.  Use our imagination and be one of Christ’s disciples.  Focus on the Lord, put yourself as a disciple and see where your prayers will take you.

Please note, this is not a fluffy devotional book.  I has many powerful sermons and many truths for believers of any spiritual age.   Another great part of this book is the whole section devoted to sermons about great men of the Bible – Jacob, Moses, Habakkuk and Paul and many more.

Kingsley Press is giving away a copy of this book to one reader. If you think this may be too deep for you to read, then why not take an opportunity to win a copy of this classic for a pastor or teacher in your church? It would also be a great resource for your church library.
