Prepping for Baby: Five Things you Might Forget to Childproof

November 19, 2013 by Pam Maynard

Finding out that there’s going to be a new bundle arriving on your doorstep in nine months is, for most people anyway, one of the most profoundly joyous times in their lives. This is especially true of women. About fifteen minutes later, however, the squealing and happy-dancing and phone calls to relatives are complete, and something else replaces them: The realization that your house is the infantile equivalent of the Thunderdome. Everywhere a mother or father to be might set their eyes, a new threat seems to emerge. Understandably, they quickly go about fixing such things. Even so, there are a number of less obvious baby hazards scattered throughout the majority of homes.

 Prepping for Baby

CHECK THE TAPS

New parents are prone to overlooking their faucets / taps. Mundane though they may be, the faucets in one’s home are sources of hot water, and hot water can cause burns. Thermometers for the bathtub, tap / faucet covers, and a keen eye on the water heater’s overall temperature are all ways to counteract such a threat.

FIGHT YOUR CORNER

This one’s simple: Square furniture, especially if it’s made of glass, is an open invitation to a curious child’s next injury. To avoid such things, prudent parents will invest in corner guards, which pad sharp corners and greatly reduce the risk of injury to little people who tend to fall over and bump into sharp things. Not to worry – corner guards come in a wide range of colors and styles suitable for almost any home decor.

WINDOW SHOPPING

Babies and very small children are curious to a fault. They love to climb, too, which means that standard windows, a thing many moms and dads may believe is out of reach for their kids, present a marked risk of injury. This risk increases the higher up a window is located. The answer to this problem is window guards. Residents of urban centers will be familiar with them, but for those who aren’t, they’re just what they sound like: Mesh or bars which cover windows while still allowing for the entrance of light and more or less unobstructed views. Self-installation is easy, but ask your landlord if you rent. Chances are they’re required to install them free of charge when asked.

THE CASE FOR SMARTPHONE CASES

Kids spill stuff all the time. Whether it’s their dinner or the dog’s water bowl, if it can be spilled, it will be. As luck would have it, liquids and other things have a way of getting all over expensive electronics, like wireless phones costing parents hundreds of dollars. That’s why wise moms and dads protect their expensive wireless phones with any one of the huge number of cases available for them. You can get them just about anywhere and you can find a good selection of high tech cases for your windows phone from bell.ca. They’ll keep expensive gadgets safe from drops, drool, spills, and scratches, and they can even help express one’s inner style. As a wise person once said, it’s “just in case”.

TAKE A PILL

Finally, it is important to understand that baby and/or child resistant lids on one’s medicines are merely the minimum when it comes to medication safety practices. Locks for medicine cabinets or even a safe for medicine storage should be priorities.

Planning for baby is both an exciting and stressful time, but if you plan ahead and prepare your home  in advance, it can make your first year with baby a little less stressful.
