October is a mysterious month full of colourful falling leaves, eerie moonlit nights, and the grand finale: Halloween. Whether you’re taking the family out for trick or treating or going to a college party, Halloween is the time to let loose and be who you’ve always wanted to be.
Dare to be different
If you’re usually quiet and a little shy, take this opportunity to show your wild, creative, or humorous side. Surprise with a unique illusion, such as appearing to be holding your own head, and you’re sure to have people coming to you.
Match your personality
To pull off any costume, you’ll need to be able to slip into character. For example, if you’re a gentle, sensitive person, you may want to dress up as Dorothy, from the Wizard of Oz, rather than Rob Zombie. If you want to be glamorous but get nervous in the spotlight, try an elegant mask or fancy makeup. On the other hand, Halloween is a chance to try out those sides of your personality you usually leave hidden.
Show off your talents
If you’re crafty, showcase your skill with a one-of-a-kind costume, such as a gargoyle, giant squid, or a rabid painter. If you have a hidden talent, take the opportunity to broadcast it, for instance, dress up as a belly dancer, gymnast, or diver.
Make a statement
If there’s a cause you wish to broadcast, bring it up in a light-hearted way, for example, dress up as a tree hugger. If there’s a stereotype you want to shake, wear it in a humorous way. For instance, if you usually dress Goth then go as a valley girl. Humour is a great ice breaker and will pave the way to acceptance.
Conversation starter
Become a conversation piece by imitating a recent news event, favourite movie, or famous person. For example, the suave Gatsby makes a perfect host and can be easily created with a tuxedo, cufflinks, and some hair gel. If you’re a history buff, personify your favourite famous figure. Artfully imitating a favourite animal is always fun and can be designed to be either sexy or cuddly and warm.
Halloween is the time to dress up anyway you want, whether it be extravagant, outrageous, or simple, but the most important thing is to let loose and have fun.
