Halloween’s slightly dark and supernatural origins have been forgotten by many, and it is now widely seen as a fun-filled, family-friendly festival – even if your children do dress up in some outrageously ghoulish costumes. Of course, as you accompany your young ones while they’re trick-or-treating, the most junior member of your family might be unaware of what all the fuss is about. But that doesn’t mean your baby or toddler can’t play a special part in the festivities.
It makes sense for all your children to be dressed for the part as the family enjoys Halloween, and that includes your baby or toddler. You don’t have to spend big dollars to outfit those tiny trick-or-treaters, and you don’t have to be limited to costumes of a spooky or supernatural nature. When it comes to costumes, Halloween is something of a blank canvas these days. Anything goes! Goblins and assorted members of the Addams Family are still very much in vogue at this time of year but there’s a trend towards less scary Halloween costumes, with no supernatural themes at all.
Knowing you don’t have to dress your beautiful baby as some sort of monster probably comes as a relief! Your little one can be a pilot, a pirate, doctor, a clown, cowboy…or a cowgirl. You can still have a lot of fun, and they’ll look fantastic, simply by adopting a special bib for the occasion – there are hundreds of bibs on the market featuring very cool designs that could form the basis of a Halloween outfit. In fact, a bib could give you the inspiration for an entire costume! So check out what you already have at home, or look at the great designs on the market. It’s certainly not a waste of money to buy one…you’ll get plenty of use from that bib long after Halloween.
While the range of Halloween costumes is unlimited, we realise your budget is not. Thankfully, a Halloween outfit for your baby or toddler can consist of many home-made elements. Old netting curtains can be used to make angel’s wings. Unused fabric can easily be turned into a superhero’s cape. Black felt spots on a white t-shirt transform your darling into a dalmatian. Wool can be turned into crazy hair. Whatever you come up with, you might want to top off your home-made costume with a cheap accessory if you wish. In many instances, it isn’t a lack of money that stops baby from looking great at Halloween time…it’s a lack of imagination and resourcefulness from their parents!
Your baby or toddler does not have to be as resplendent in their outfit as your older children. A small nod to Halloween is more than sufficient, and just as cute. Don’t think of the occasion as a beauty contest. Think of it as a chance to have some family fun where everyone can be involved. So, after you’ve come up with a winning costume for your little one, you might want to give some thought as to what YOU will wear while the family is trick-or-treating…because everyone means everyone!
