Easy Ways to Clean Up Your Yard Before Putting Your Home on the Market

November 4, 2026 by Pam Maynard 1 Comment

More often, buyers today love to form an opinion about your home before they’re even invited to step inside. An overgrown lawn, cluttered driveway, or neglected entrance, for example, can make even a beautiful property look like a project waiting to happen. The good news is that you do not need expensive landscaping to improve your home’s curb appeal. You can clean up your yard to make your property look inviting, well cared for, and ready for its next owner.

Make Your Landscaping Look Fresh Again

You can always start with the greenery that buyers see from the street. Mow the lawn, trim overgrown shrubs, pull weeds, and remove dead leaves from flower beds. These simple tasks can make your yard look noticeably neater.

Next, check whether branches or bushes block windows, walkways, or your front entrance. Trim them carefully to reveal your home’s features while keeping healthy plants intact.

If you want more ideas for making your property stand out, you can explore some exterior updates that make buyers go wow, including simple ways to refresh your landscaping and create a more inviting entrance.

Remove Unwanted Vehicles Before Listing

An old car occupying your driveway can take attention away from your home. The same applies to a damaged vehicle, a non-running truck, or a car that has become a storage space for forgotten belongings.

Removing it creates more visible parking space and helps your driveway look cleaner in listing photos. It also allows buyers to see how much room they have for their own vehicles.

If you have an unwanted vehicle in Los Angeles, consider exploring professionals in the field like Cash for Cars and its LA pickup options. Also, before arranging collection, confirm the vehicle’s eligibility, pickup terms, possible fees, and required ownership documents.

Once the vehicle is gone, sweep the driveway and inspect the surface for oil stains. A clean, open parking area can make your property’s exterior feel more spacious.

Clear the Clutter Hiding in Your Yard

It is not easy to spot your property’s messy points, so take some time to walk around your property and look at it through a buyer’s eyes. Broken planters, unused furniture, discarded tools, damaged toys, and piles of scrap can make an otherwise attractive yard feel neglected.

You may need to sort all your belongings into three groups to be more efficient: keep, donate or sell, and discard. Store useful items neatly, and arrange proper disposal for anything you no longer need. Do not forget the corners behind your house. These overlooked areas often collect clutter that makes your outdoor space appear smaller than it really is.

Give Driveways and Walkways Some Attention

Your driveway and walkways may be your best shot to guide buyers toward your front door. Sweep away leaves, dirt, and loose gravel, then remove weeds growing between paving stones.

For really stubborn stains, you may have to use a suitable cleaner and follow its instructions. If you pressure wash concrete, test a small area first to avoid damaging the surface. Check for loose stones, cracked paving, and uneven sections. Addressing these problems improves the appearance of your outdoor areas while helping prevent trips and falls.

Turn Your Backyard Into Usable Space

Your backyard may need to be kept up and help your buyers imagine enjoying their new home. Clear the patio, trim the grass, and remove anything that blocks seating areas.

It would be best to clean your existing outdoor furniture and arrange it neatly. A small table and two chairs can suggest a relaxing breakfast spot without requiring costly new purchases to keep up with the trend. You can also have a picnic area complete with lively mats, comfy throw rugs, and soft lights for relaxing evening views.

Finish With a Welcoming Entrance

You need a hassle-free and warm entryway to catch attention, so make every step count; sweep the porch, clean the front door, remove cobwebs and bird droppings, and wipe down outdoor lights. Also, you need to clean visible windows and make sure your house numbers are easy to read to avoid confusing your viewers.

Finally, before listing your property’s photos, walk from the street up front to your backyard and consider everything you see, like how a committed buyer would. Clear distractions, fix obvious eyesores, and let buyers see the space your home offers.
