The Hour Before Bed Matters More Than the Eight Hours After It

October 14, 2026 by Pam Maynard Leave a Comment

Most sleep advice starts at the moment your head hits the pillow. Cool room, dark curtains, no screens. All sensible, and all of it arrives too late to help with the part people actually struggle with, which is the hour before bed when your body is still running at daytime speed.

That hour is where most poor nights are decided. If you finish work at ten, scroll until eleven and then expect to be asleep by five past, you’re asking your nervous system to change gear faster than it can. The fix to this is a sequence you repeat often enough that your body starts reading it as a signal.

Why Winding Down Is a Process, Not a Moment

Your body runs on a roughly 24-hour internal clock, and it takes cues from light, temperature, food, and activity to work out where it is in that cycle. Those cues are slow-moving. Bright overhead light at 10 p.m. tells your system it’s still afternoon. A heavy meal close to bedtime keeps digestion busy when it should be settling.

The practical takeaway is that a wind-down routine works best when it starts 60 to 90 minutes before you want to be asleep, not five minutes before. What goes in that window matters less than the fact that it’s consistent.

Building a Routine You’ll Actually Repeat

The most common mistake is designing an elaborate ritual you abandon within a week. Three or four small things you do every night beat a ten-step routine you manage twice.

  • Drop the Light Level: Switch from overhead lighting to lamps an hour before bed. It’s the single easiest change and it costs nothing.
  • Get the Temperature Moving Downward: A warm shower an hour out works because of the drop in body temperature afterwards, not the warmth itself.
  • Give your Hands Something to Do: For example, reading a physical book, stretching, or tidying a surface. The aim is a task that occupies you without demanding much.
  • Keep the Last Hour Screen-Light and Low-Stakes: Email and news are the two worst things to check last, because both start problems you can’t solve at 11 p.m.
  • Same Time, Most Nights: Consistency does more than any individual step in this list.

Where Hemp Fits, and Where It Doesn’t

Plenty of people have added a hemp product to their evening routine over the last few years. For some, it’s become as familiar a part of winding down as making a cup of tea or picking up a book.

Products like Cypress Hemp Gummies offer another option for adults interested in incorporating hemp into their nighttime routine. The key is understanding what you’re taking, paying attention to cannabinoid content and serving sizes, and giving yourself enough time before bed.

Research into cannabinoids and sleep is still developing, with much of the available evidence coming from relatively small studies. Hemp products are best considered alongside established sleep habits, such as keeping a regular bedtime and reducing stimulation in the evening, rather than as a replacement for them.

Understanding the Ratio on the Label

If you’ve looked at hemp gummies recently, you’ll have seen numbers like 1:1, 1:3 or 2:5 on the packaging, and almost nobody explains them.

The ratio describes THC to CBD. A 1:3 product has three times as much CBD as THC. A 1:1 is balanced. The higher the CBD side relative to THC, the gentler most people find the experience. It’s the most useful number on the package, and it’s the one shoppers most often ignore in favor of total milligrams.

Extraction method matters too. For instance, live resin is made from cannabis frozen straight after harvest rather than dried and cured, which preserves the terpenes, the aromatic compounds that give each variety its character.

A few practical notes if you’re trying this for the first time. Anything you swallow passes through digestion first, so it’s felt considerably later than you’d expect, which is why people take a second one too early and regret it. Start with the lowest serving on the label and take it well before you plan to sleep, not as you get into bed.

These products are for adults 21 and over. Don’t drive after taking one. If you’re drug tested at work, know that full-spectrum hemp products contain trace THC that standard workplace screens can detect, and no hemp product can promise you a clean result. Hemp laws also vary by state and have been changing quickly, so check your own state’s current rules before ordering anything.

What to Fix First

If your nights are genuinely bad, start with the boring structural things before you buy anything. A consistent wake time, a dark, cool room, and cutting caffeine by early afternoon will do more than any product on the market.

Once those are in place, the wind-down hour is where you get the remaining improvement, and that’s where small additions earn their place. A stretch routine, a book, lamps instead of ceiling lights, and for some people, a hemp gummy taken early enough to be part of the routine rather than a last-minute attempt to force sleep.

The thing worth remembering is that none of it works on the first night. Sleep responds to patterns, not to single interventions, so give any change a couple of weeks before you decide whether it did anything.
