There’s a point every winter when I remember just how much stuff it takes to get a family outside.
Coats are piled on the couch. Gloves disappear five minutes before we leave. Someone gets completely bundled up and suddenly needs the bathroom. And by the time I’m dressed, I’ve usually added so many layers that bending over to tie my boots feels like an Olympic event.
I love being outside when it’s cold. I just don’t love feeling swallowed by my clothes.
So lately, I’ve been paying more attention to base layers for cold weather and what I actually want from them. For me, it’s pretty simple. I want to feel warm without starting with a ton of bulk.
That’s what made me curious about LÉ BENT and, specifically, the Women’s Heavyweight Grid Fleece Crew. It’s made for those seriously cold days when a flimsy layer just isn’t what I’m reaching for.
And as someone who is usually the first person in the family to announce, “I’m freezing,” that sounded right up my alley.
Why LÉ BENT Caught My Attention
I have a soft spot for brands that come from people who actually spend time doing the thing they design products for.
LÉ BENT started with two friends in Val d’Isère in the French Alps. While working in a boot-fitting shop, they had an idea to create an exceptionally good snow sock. That eventually led to their Signature Blend of merino and rayon from bamboo.
Even the name has a little story behind it. “LÉ” is a nod to Val d’Isère, while “BENT” represents doing things differently and bending the norm.
But what really caught my attention as a parent was something much simpler: this isn’t just a women’s line.
There are options for men, women, and kids. Plus, there are different weights depending on the weather. That makes sense for family life because we definitely don’t all agree on what counts as “cold.”
Base Layers for Cold Weather That Don’t Feel So Bulky
I’ve learned that my least favorite winter strategy is simply adding another layer. And then another.
Sure, I might be warmer. But eventually I feel like I’m wearing half my closet.
Women’s Heavyweight Grid Fleece Crew
The Women’s Heavyweight Grid Fleece Crew is the warmest base layer top in LÉ BENT’s lineup, so this is the one I’d reach for when temperatures really drop.
The inside is what interested me most. Instead of being completely flat, it has a 3D grid texture. Those little sections create pockets that hold warm air, while open channels help moisture and extra heat move away when you get more active.
In other words, the idea isn’t just to keep piling on thickness.
And I really like that approach.
The fabric itself is a 280gsm blend of 37% rayon from bamboo, 16% merino wool, 44% recycled polyester, and 3% elastane. The rayon from bamboo contributes to the soft feel against the skin, while merino brings odor resistance.
For me, though, the appeal comes back to how I want to dress in winter. I’d rather start with one thoughtfully designed warm layer than immediately pile on three bulky ones.
Especially when I know I’ll be moving.
Whether I’m outside with the family or just dealing with one of those bitterly cold days when errands somehow take twice as long, I want warmth that doesn’t make me feel restricted.
Because Every Family Member Is Different
This might be the part other parents relate to most: everyone in my family seems to experience weather differently.
One person is freezing. Another insists they’re hot. Someone else refuses the extra layer I brought specifically because I knew they would get cold.
So I like that LÉ BENT doesn’t treat base layers for cold weather as one-size-fits-all when it comes to warmth.
Their Featherweight pieces are intended for warm-to-mild conditions. Lightweight covers mild-to-cold weather, while Midweight moves into cold-to-extreme conditions. Then there’s Heavyweight for the really extreme days.
There are choices across men’s, women’s, and kids’ products too.
I find that much more useful than assuming everyone needs the thickest possible option all winter. My preference would be to think about what we’re doing, how cold it will actually be, and how much each person tends to feel the cold.
Because sometimes you need serious warmth.
Other times, you just need enough.
I’m Ready to Retire the Five-Layer Look
I’ll probably never master the art of getting the entire family dressed, packed, and out the door for a winter day without at least a little chaos.
Someone will still lose a glove.
I’ll still ask, “Does everybody have everything?” and discover five minutes later that the answer was absolutely not.
But I can at least make my own layers simpler.
That’s what I like about the idea behind LÉ BENT’s Women’s Heavyweight Grid Fleece Crew. It isn’t interesting to me because I want more winter clothing. Quite the opposite. I’m interested because I want the layers I do wear to work harder without making me feel unnecessarily bundled up.
And when the temperatures aren’t quite so brutal, I like knowing there are lighter options instead of automatically reaching for the warmest thing available.
Winter adventures with a family will probably always require a mountain of gear. I’m just hoping a little less of that mountain has to be on me.
