20+ Affordable After-School Activities That Keep Kids Off Screens and Having Fun

July 31, 2025 by Pam Maynard

New Disclosure

🌺 Affordable After-School Activities That Don’t Involve Screens (and Still Keep Kids Entertained)

When the school day wraps up and those backpacks hit the floor, many parents are met with the same familiar question: “What now?” The tug of reaching for a tablet or flipping on the TV is certainly tempting—we’ve all felt that pull! However, if you’re on a mission to reduce screen time while keeping your little ones engaged in their after-school activities and joyful, you’re in exactly the right place.

The great news is that screen-free fun is not only possible, but it can also be affordable and easy to execute. You don’t need a treasure trove of fancy gadgets or expensive toys to make after-school hours enjoyable. With a sprinkle of creativity and a handful of everyday supplies that you likely already have at home, you can transform those quiet hours into a whirlwind of imaginative play, active adventures, and peaceful moments for the whole family.

🎨 Creative Play at Home

Kids love to create—and it doesn’t take much to spark their imagination. Keep a small bin of dollar store craft supplies (think pom-poms, glue sticks, markers, and paper) and let them create freely. You can also guide them with a simple prompt like, “Make a monster using only shapes!”

Other fun, no-screen ideas:

  • Build an indoor fort or even an obstacle course using pillows, chairs, and blankets.

  • Create a comic book with their own characters and storyline.

  • Host a puppet show or have them set up a pretend “school” for their stuffed animals.

My son used to love to host his own puppet show for all his stuffed animals!  He would line them up, handout books and make them all read their stories to each other!  So cute!

🏃 Move Their Bodies

After sitting all day, kids need to move! Physical activities don’t have to be sports-based to be fun and healthy.

Try these low-cost movement ideas:

  • Backyard scavenger hunt (use colors, nature items, or shapes)

  • Nature walk with a journal to draw or write about what they see

  • Impromptu dance party or a calming yoga/stretch session

  • Jump rope challenges or sidewalk chalk games (hopscotch never goes out of style)

Tip: Turn these into a weekly challenge chart to keep kids motivated and mix things up.

From crafts to outdoor games, it is enough to keep them occupied, busy, and making some pretty cool things! Browse through these 22 Outdoor Summer Crafts & Activities for Kids that are sure to spur you and the kids ‘ creative side.

🎭 Simple Social Fun

If you have multiple kids or playdates in the mix, activities that promote teamwork and creativity are perfect.

Ideas to try:

  • Board game swap night with a neighbor or friends

  • “Cooking club” where kids make a snack together (trail mix, fruit kabobs, etc.)

  • Rotating book club with a buddy and themed bookmarks

  • Create a “kindness jar” with one act of kindness to complete each day

Creativity was never lacking in my son’s cooking adventures with his friends.  One of his favorite snacks to make was Cheez-its, chocolate chips, and cheese. Yes, I tried it. No, it wasn’t good.

📚 Quiet Time That Still Engages

Not every after-school moment needs to be high-energy. Give kids a chance to decompress with quiet-but-engaging options:

  • Listen to an audiobook while coloring or drawing

  • Try a puzzle or word search. Escape room puzzles coming soon!!

  • Create a window-watching journal to track birds, squirrels, or weather changes

  • Build with LEGOs using themed prompts (build your dream treehouse!)

Optional Tip: Set up a cozy corner with soft pillows, books, and supplies to make this a go-to routine.

✨ Wrap-Up: More Peace, Less Screen Time

Creating an after-school routine that doesn’t rely on screens doesn’t have to be a struggle. A mix of movement, creativity, quiet time, and social fun can go a long way toward giving your kids what they need and preserving your sanity.

What do after-school hours look like in your home? I’d love to hear your favorite go-to activities—share them in the comments!
