Why Portugal Makes for a Family-Friendly Walking Holiday

May 20, 2025 by Pam Maynard

Why Portugal is great for a family-friendly walking holiday

If you’re tired of typical theme parks and crowded beach resorts, or simply don’t have the money for another visit to Disney World, then you might be considering a different path. Portugal, which is often visited for its cities and coastline, is a great choice for families. Portugal is an excellent destination for a family-friendly walking holiday.  If there’s one thing everyone knows about the cultures within the Iberian Peninsula, it’s that they love kids and are very family-oriented. But, for adventurers, it’s quite possibly a match made in heaven.

Terrains of choice

For a relatively small nation, Portugal has many different landscapes and trails. Because of the broad choice, there is a good choice of ease, which makes it suitable for teenagers or children much younger.

Orbis Ways is a travel agent that lays this all out quite clearly, presenting the many trails and their difficulties. Along the Atlantic coast are sections like Rota Vicentina, as well as the easier stretches of the Fishermen’s Trail or Historical Way in the Alentejo and Algarve. These have great sea views  along the entire way with a nice breeze.

Boardwalks like the Passadiços da Ria de Alvor are more gentle and have highly accessible routes with opportunities for birdwatching and relaxed beach stops – there will also be amenities along the way.

Inland, you have gentle hills like the Douro Valley, which goes through vineyards. You can drive to these spots, then take a walk, but you should consider genuine, 100-mile trails that you can cover in a week or so. It’s not a dangerous country, and you’re never far from a rest stop.

Engaging activities and cultural enrichment

A Portuguese walking holiday isn’t just about the trails themselves, of course, as they have many engaging activities that young minds will enjoy. Mealtimes are memorable, with children indulging the local treats like the iconic Pastel de Nata or simple, fresh grilled fish.

Picnics packed with regional produce can be joyous and very affordable, while the history really comes alive at magical, imposing castles like Lisbon’s Castelo de São Jorge. They’re never far to get to, as many are walkable, or at most, a bus or taxi.

Simplified logistics

Portugal’s size is its advantage when it comes to family vacations. Its mild Mediterranean climate makes it perfect for walking, particularly in Spring and Autumn. Reaching trailheads is almost always simple, with good transport links like trains and local buses, as well as readily available car rentals. To stay connected while navigating routes or booking transport on the go, many travelers rely on a Holafly travel esim in Europe to avoid roaming fees and keep maps and itineraries easily accessible

English is widely spoken in tourist areas, and they’re often expecting visitors. This is in part because of the Camino de Santiago trails, which runs through Portugal, so walking along these will mean the places are expecting tourists and are more likely to speak English.

Creating family memories

Portugal is a beloved tourist destination for its beaches and resorts, along with its historic cities. But, for adventurous families, it’s the perfect place for a family-friendly walking holiday as it has interesting but safe wildlife, a mild climate, and is jam-packed with good transport links. Compared to a lot of Western and Southern Europe, it’s also a very affordable trip.
