Alter Eco: Clean, Green and Perfectly Chocolatey! #Momdadgrad

May 13, 2025 by Lydia Smith

Disclosure Statement for Mom Does Reviews

Alter Eco makes organic chocolate products that are the cleanest and greenest on earth. This company is committed to making the best-tasting chocolate while taking care of the earth and the farmers in many ways. For the purpose of this review, I received a bundle of their top-selling chocolate bars and truffles. It was an absolute joy to taste these wonderful treats, but the real value came from learning about the amazing difference that Alter Eco is making in our world.

Alter Eco believes we can “eat chocolate, save the planet,” and I am ready to do that! With each bite of chocolate, I can taste the commitment and passion that Alter Eco has for their brand.

Alter Eco’s mission includes:

  • Organic ingredients: no GMOS, additives, gluten, or soy
  • Regenerative Agriculture: Farming that restores ecosystems
  • Fairer Trade: Better than fair trade wages for their farmers
  • Low/No Waste: Compostable, recyclable, post-consumer-recycled packaging
  • Climate Label: 100% of carbon emissions measured and offset

Mint Crème Truffle Thins

Mint and chocolate are one of my favorite combinations, and the Mint Creme Truffle Thins bar hits the spot!

The Alter Eco Truffle Thins line is what is born when a chocolate bar meets a chocolate truffle. This bar has 60% deep Ecuadorian cacao and sweet peppermint. It is delicious.

Another bar in the Truffle Thins line is the Sweet Ginger Truffle Thin.

Sweet Ginger Truffle Thin

This bar combines rich velvety 60% cacao with a sweet, subtly spiced ginger filling. The ginger provides a delightful kick that balances out the smooth chocolate.

I never think of chocolate and ginger together, but this Truffle Thins bar is amazing. Unique, flavorful, and yummy!

Quinoa Crunch

Another interesting combination Alter Eco has put together is organic dark chocolate and quinoa! They have introduced Ecuadorian dark chocolate to the Bolivian ancient grain, quinoa, to create a beautifully nutty and chocolatey bar. The royal pearl quinoa crips add a delightful crunch to the smooth, rich chocolate. Alter Eco also uses raw cane sugar and Madagascar bourbon vanilla beans to enhance the amazing flavor.

Burnt Caramel

Alter Eco sent me a wonderful selection of chocolate products, but I think that the Burnt Caramel Organic Dark Chocolate bar is my favorite. It is the perfect balance of sweet, creamy, and bitter. They utilize raw cane sugar, organic cream, and pastured butter simmered to the brink of burnt for a masterful caramel crunch. The Alter Eco Swiss chocolate maker then drowns this golden alchemy in deep, dark Ecuadorian chocolate, and then adds a sprinkle of coveted fleur de sel de Guérande for a mouth-watering good measure. Each malty-sweet crunch is deeply satisfying–and nearly impossible to resist.

Raspberry Blackout

The Raspberry Blackout is the first of two chocolate bars that Alter Eco sent me that are made from 85% cacao. This high cacao content makes these bars dark, intense, and richly bittersweet. Alter Eco has balanced the deep, dark flavor of the chocolate with the tart taste of raspberry. While this is a delicious chocolate bar, it is made for people who appreciate complexity and a strong, lingering cocoa taste.

Classic Blackout

The Classic Blackout chocolate bar is the second 85% cacao chocolate bar that Alter Eco sent me to taste. This bar is not for the faint of heart; it is only for those serious about chocolate. It offers a bold, sophisticated flavor with deep cocoa notes and minimal sweetness. The Ecuadorian cacao’s malty intensity matches its Dominican cousin’s robust fruitiness. Swiss chocolatiers meticulously roast and conch these fine ingredients to balance darkness and depth with a round, smooth, creamy finish.

Spring Truffle Gift Sampler

My favorite product from Alter Eco is the amazingly delicious and decadent truffles! This sampler pack includes truffles wrapped in beautiful spring-colored, plant-based, non-GMO, compostable wrappers, so they were adorable as part of my Easter decorations. It came with three flavors: Salted Caramel, Classic Dark, and Sea Salt. The truffles are smooth, creamy, and full of chocolatey goodness.

Alter Eco’s Commitment to Taking Care of the Land and Farmers

Each chocolate bar comes wrapped in a wrapper that includes valuable information about regenerative agriculture.

Regenerative Agriculture

Alter Eco believes in making food that restores rather than depletes the earth. Regenerative agriculture is a holistic approach to growing food that replenishes the soil.  This sustainable method of growing creates extraordinary cacao. Alter Eco plants a diverse mix of trees around the cacao crop to mimic an abundant forest ecosystem. This is called dynamic agroforestry. It results in:

  • Healthy cacao trees
  • Soil fertility
  • Drought resistance
  • Double the trees per acre
  • Biodiversity
  • Carbon absorption
  • Shade for cacao and farmers
  • Farmer income stability

This is achieved through:

  • No-till planting methods
  • Minimizing bare ground
  • The use of cover crops
  • The use of organic matter to amend the soil (compost and mulch)

Alter Eco Foods promotes regenerative agriculture practices in cacao cultivation through its Alter Eco Foundation. This foundation is committed to assisting their cacao suppliers in Ecuador in transitioning to dynamic agroforestry.

My Thoughts

I have always loved dark chocolate, which is why this was the perfect review for me. Each Alter Eco chocolate bar and truffle was decadent and delicious. But what makes this company unique is its commitment to sustainability, fair trade, and taking care of the land. This is clear in their farming practices, but it is also made evident by the numerous certifications that they have earned. Many of these certifications require a rigorous process that few companies want to take the time to earn. Some examples are:

  • Certified B Corporation
  • The Climate Label Certified
  • USDA Organic
  • Fair For Life

This is a company that I can support. Organic chocolate that regenerates ecosystems, empowers farmers, and reverses climate change– why eat any other chocolate?
