Tips for Keeping Warm When it’s Cold Outside

December 13, 2024 by Pam Maynard

Winter is lovely for many reasons! Christmas is something a lot of people look forward to; you can go for nice winter walks and cozy up by your fireplace, drinking a warm hot chocolate. The downside to winter is the coldness. When winter is fully here, it can get very cold outside which can leak inside your home, making your living area cold – there is nothing worse than being cold at home. It’s important to learn all the tips for keeping warm this winter!

Having a furnace can help keep you warm – if you are having issues with yours, consider reaching out to a furnace repair company – placing blankets around your home gives you something to wrap up in but also a nice interior boost, whilst a thicker duvet is a must. When it’s really cold, you’ll be wrapping yourself up in your duvet and blanket!

Keeping yourself warm when it’s cold outside is very important. Keep on reading our guide on five ways to do so. From a thicker duvet, blankets and a hot water bottle, we hope we give you some useful suggestions.

Consider using a thicker duvet

It’s always useful to have a couple of duvets that you rotate and store. For the winter months, a nice, warm and cozy 2.5 tog duvet will help keep you warm. However, in the summer months, having a 0.5-tog duvet will help as you will have the opposite problem and your home will be too warm.

When changing your duvet to a warmer duvet, having a thicker duvet set will also add another layer of warmth. Plus changing your duvet set can add a new feel to your bedroom, bringing it to life in a different way. Why not buy a couple of sets, this way you can constantly make changes to your bedroom every couple of weeks.

Have a hot water bottle ready

Hot water bottles are great as they keep you warm and they keep you cosy. They are also very useful if you are feeling unwell or have a cold. We like to have several around the house so that we can quickly get out when we are feeling cold. A good tip: place a hot water bottle under your duvet before you get in it. The hot water bottle will warm your bed up so it’s not freezing cold when you get in it. Some people like to keep the hot water bottle in the bed with them as this will help keep them warm as well.

Blankets will keep you warm

We love blankets for two reasons. One, they will keep you warm when it’s cold outside, and two, they look great as part of your home interiors. A blanket can be laid over your bed or placed across the arm of your chair. Blankets come in all shapes, styles and sizes, meaning you can easily find one to match your home interiors.

You can also rotate them around during the months, helping you constantly update the overall feel of your home. A lot of retailers are now selling electric blankets, which heat up very quickly and keep you warm and cosy. They are cheaper to run than putting the heating on and are big enough to go over two people whilst sitting on the sofa. When it’s chilly, these are perfect!

Keeping Warm When it's Cold Outside

Change your curtains to thick curtains

Having thicker curtains is ideal for keeping the heat in your home, helping you stay warm and not lose the heat your radiators provide. They also stop the cold from leaking in your room, through your windows condensing. Curtains come in different styles, however, the best type of curtains to keep the heat in are the long-length ones, as these cover more of the window.

If you have a local DIY store near you, it can be useful to visit one, see the curtains they have available, and speak to an expert about which ones they recommend for keeping the heat in when it’s cold outside. Sometimes, they will do home visits to ensure they are selling you the best product for your requirements.

Your home is a lot nicer when you are feeling comfortable in it. We hope our suggestions have given you some ideas as to how you can keep yourself warmer when it’s getting cold out. What methods do you use to keep yourself warm when it’s cold inside? Which of the above suggestions did you find most useful? Is there anything missing in our guide that you think we should be adding? Let us know in the comment box below. We look forward to hearing from you.
