5 Popular Dishes In Asian Cuisine

June 17, 2013 by Pam Maynard

Asian cuisine is a favorite of most people. It has a spicy, exotic flare that foods from other ethnicities cannot duplicate. Asian cuisine covers food from a number of countries, some of which you would not typically associate with the “Asian” heading. Aside from China, Japan and Thailand, Asian cuisine also hails from countries like Afghanistan, Syria, Turkey and Kuwait. Given the sheer number of nationalities covered under its umbrella, Asian cuisine is sure to offer something to satisfy even the most picky pallets. We’re going to outline the five most popular dishes in Asian cuisine to help you decide what to order the next time you’re in the mood for food with an Asian flare.

Pho – Vietnam

Pho (pronounced FA) is the most popular dish in Vietnam cuisine. It’s a watery beef-based broth that has rice noodles, bits of beef and a variety of herbs floating in it. You can easily find it in most any restaurant that serves Asian cuisine and it’s usually inexpensive as well.

Peking Duck – China

Peking duck is the name of the actual duck that this dish gets its name from. Peking ducks are usually roasted and dried before being served in restaurants, with the skin and meat being served separately. The skin is cooked in sugar and spices while the meat is braised in a special sauce. Lots of raw vegetable side dishes will likely be served along with it.

Sushi – Japan

Sushi is an acquired taste, being that it’s made from vinegar-soaked rice and raw fish. Other ingredients like seaweed and spices are blended in with it to form various artistic shapes and pieces that resemble fine candies almost. Sushi is very popular in just about any country in the world and is served with a variety of dipping sauces.

Satay – Indonesia

Satay are just kabobs of meat that are cooked with a number of seasonings and served on skewers. Some of the meat that may be using in making satay would be goat, beef, chicken or fish. They are cooked over a wood-based fire and served with a variety of spices and seasonings on the side.

Momo – Nepal

The Nepali momo is a dumpling that’s made from flour and filled with a variety of mixtures.  Some common fillings for momo are meat based fillings, vegetables or even cheese. They can be served in a base of broth or paste or they can be served alone with sauces on the side for dipping.
