Remaining Positive After a Difficult Childbirth

December 6, 2023 by Pam Maynard

Nobody wants childbirth to be anything other than trouble-free—but that is not always the case. A traumatic or difficult childbirth could result in a birth injury and can potentially have a huge emotional, psychological, and financial effect not only on the parents but the wider family as well.

In the face of all of this, it is hard to stay positive, but by employing some of the following strategies, it may be less difficult.

Seek professional help

Seeking the help of professionals is a crucial aspect of maintaining a positive mindset after a difficult childbirth. Recognizing the impact that the experience may have on mental and emotional well-being, many mothers wisely turn to healthcare professionals such as obstetricians, midwives, and mental health specialists for guidance and support. Your first job is to seek help from the experts, and this falls into two main areas:

Therapy and counseling

Your family and friends will be able to provide much-needed support, but for an event as traumatic as this, it may be the best idea to seek the help of professionals or join a support group with those you share the same experience.

Legal support

Many of the causes of traumatic and problematic childbirth can be spotted by medical professionals and, as a result, should be avoided. One of the most common avoidable injuries is shoulder dystocia, and if this is the case, then you may have grounds for a shoulder dystocia lawsuit. This can give you access to the support and settlement you need to stay positive in the face of such difficulties.

Focus on recovery

The best way to stay positive after all that has happened is to focus on getting yourself back on an even keel. The first step here is to acknowledge your feelings and understand that you will be experiencing a mixture of emotions. As mentioned above, talking about it can help tremendously—as could writing it down in a journal or blogging about it in an effort to help others.

As part of this, you should take a little time to educate yourself about what happened so you can understand it and process it a little more easily. If you are able to do that, then you stand a better chance of being able to focus positively on the present and the joys of new parenthood.

Plan ahead

With thoughts of your well-being at the front of your mind, you should consider meditation or perhaps yoga as a way to stay relaxed and positive. This can not only help heal any mental scars but can also aid with recovery from any physical repercussions of the difficult birth.

You will also need to limit input from others—except where absolutely necessary—as although they mean well, some of the comments that family and friends may make can feel unwelcome. You should also set boundaries so that you are not swamped with people visiting and trying to help when you just want to be with your baby.

You also need to acknowledge your own strength in getting through the difficult birth. This is often neglected in such situations but is key to staying positive—especially if you have another pregnancy planned.

Final thoughts

While it is easy to focus on the negative after a difficult birth, for the well-being of both yourself and your new baby, it is better to stay positive. In the face of complications or unexpected hurdles during childbirth, maintaining a positive mindset often involves acknowledging the difficulties while choosing to emphasize the triumphs and moments of joy.

It might mean celebrating small victories, such as the support from medical professionals, the strength gained from overcoming obstacles, or the deepened connection with the partner through shared experiences. You need to focus on your recovery and seek help, then plan ahead for your new life as a parent with a positive outlook.
