Essential Newborn Clothing: A Guide to Building a Practical Wardrobe

September 21, 2023 by Pam Maynard

First off – big congratulations on the arrival of your little bundle of joy! As a new parent, one of the most exciting and, at the same time, challenging tasks is filling out your baby’s wardrobe. There are so many options available so that it can be a tad bit overwhelming. Fear not! In this guide, we will help you navigate the creaks and crevices world of newborn clothing and build a practical wardrobe that combines style, comfort, and functionality. This way, your baby will stay safe, comfy and happy!

And as we all know – a happy baby equals happy parents!

What are the needs of my newborn?

You have to understand and always keep in mind that babies have much more delicate skin than most adults. Only a select few materials are right for them. When selecting clothing for your little one, prioritize comfort, softness, and ease of putting on.

Keep in mind that newborns grow quickly, so it’s important to choose clothing that allows for growth and flexibility, as much as possible, of course…

Fabrics – the most important aspect

As mentioned, babies can be fussy if something feels not right to them. We, adults, can also feel irritated and discomforted by the itchiness or hardness of certain fabrics. Thus, with the much gentler baby skin, it’s essential to pick out the very finest clothing fabrics for them. Let’s run down a few options.

Organic fabrics.

Linen comes to mind first. It doesn’t cause irritation and has great thermal insulation properties. During the summer, it keeps the body cool and during spring or fall, it keeps warmth underneath the fabric. Homemade organic, softened linen is growing in popularity. Linen children’s hats from Ashgeneration caught our eye. They have creative and funky designs that will have your newborn looking cute and fresh.

Cotton.

This can be a very safe and easy choice to make. Although cotton isn’t always a 10/10 for all babies (like the aforementioned linen), it can be a safe bet if you have to make a quick choice.

Big no-no to harsh, synthetic materials for newborn clothing. They are not good for the skin of a human newborn, so stay away from them.

What items to look at?

So, since we know the materials to look for, let’s focus on the items that are the foundation of a children’s wardrobe.

Onesies.

This item is practically synonymous with the glamorous baby lifestyle. These one-piece garments are essentially bodysuits with a snap or button. They look cool, offer kids lots of comfort, and don’t pose as an obstacle during diaper changes.

Sock shoes.

These hug their feet and keep them comfy and warm 24/7. Regular footwear is still to early to consider, so your best bet is something plushy, cozy, and even better if it’s cute to look at. One of the biggest upsides of sock shoes is that they’re super flexible, making crawling and first steps a breeze.

Adorable accessories.

We touched upon this a bit earlier. Just like organic linen baby hats and bonnets, all other accessories should be nice to wear, protective, and, preferably, adorable. Look for headbands, bandanas, ribbons, and other accessories that add comfort first and style second.
