Meal Planning- It Pay$$ to Plan Ahead

February 9, 2012 by Pam Maynard

Benefits of Meal Planning

Guest post by Heather Smith

A lot of people are turned off by the idea of meal-planning because they think it takes too much work. However while it may require more time up front, meal-planning actually will end up being well worth the time you put into it, especially when you factor in the following benefits:

  1.       Saves time
Long gone will be the days of coming home from work unsure of what to make for dinner and the last minute trips to the grocery store to pick up those elusive ingredients that you thought you had but then realized you didn’t. Instead you’ll have everything you need for specific meals during the week thanks to your meal-planning prep work so there will be no last minute running around necessary.
  2.       Saves money
How many times have you gotten the grocery store flyers in the mail and tossed them without a second thought? Instead of tossing them out take some time to browse through them and see which stores are having specials on certain items that you need. That way you’ll be able to save money on food by buying them at the cheapest price. Plus since you already know what products you’ll need you can look around for coupons that will save you even more money.
  3.     Healthier Meals
Dining in almost always trumps dining out in the healthy food department, and when you plan your meals ahead of time you won’t have to worry about ordering take out or going out to eat because you came home not knowing what to cook. You’ll also control the ingredients going into your meals so you decide how healthy they’ll turn out.
  4.       Less Waste
Far too often we buy food thinking that we’ll use it for a meal and then end up throwing it out because it went bad before we had a chance to use it up. But when you plan your meals ahead of time you buy only the food that you need for those meals so nothing ends up going to waste.
  5.    Less Stress
Coming home from a long day and trying to figure out what to throw together for dinner is unnecessarily stressful. When you know what meals you can make ahead of time you can just break out the recipe and start cooking – no thought involved – not to mention you can find meals that you can make in less than 30 minutes for quick weeknight dinners.

Meal-planning gets a bad rap for taking too much time, but the truth is it has a lot more pros to it than it does cons. The extra time spent planning out meals sure beats wasting time, money, food, and energy that you’ll lose because you chose not to plan your meals.
