Make Your Vacation Easier on Your Wallet

May 22, 2013 by Pam Maynard

vacation-2

Most people like to take a vacation at least once a year. It’s a great chance to get away and relax — but that can end up costing you. When people go on vacation, they tend to toss aside their money management skills. In many ways, a vacation is the time to let loose and to treat yourself. But there are ways to keep saving money, even if you are on vacation.

Vacation Close to Home

The best way to keep a practical budget for your vacation is to plan ahead of time. This begins with choosing your destination. Taking a locally based vacation will allow you the same possibility to get away without having to shell out excessive amounts of money. You’ll save money on airfare, car rental and, if you vacation close enough to home, accommodations. If you have a big purchase coming up in the near future, such as buying a car or a house, taking a local vacation can be a good alternative to an exotic getaway.

Look For Deals

There are thousands of deals to be had, regardless of your vacation destination. Spending time looking at deals on travel sites and sites like savings.com can not only save you money, but also inspire some activities for your vacation. You may find that there are some interesting attractions that you had not considered available for a discounted rate. You can also save money by planning out expenditures ahead of time. If you are driving, or even flying, having snacks and sandwiches prepared ahead of time can save you from having to stop at diners, restaurants, or convenience stores along the way. If you are driving, you can also plan out where the best prices for gas will be along the way. Furthermore, booking your airline tickets in advance will lead to big savings, because it typically costs much more to book a flight the closer you are to your travel date.

Travel With Another Family

You can also consider taking your next vacation with another family. Doing so allows you to split the costs of many expenses. For example, if both families have pets, you may be able to find a sitter for both animals, or find a kennel that offers discounts for more than one animal. Condo or house rentals are usually more affordable than hotels, plus you’ll have access to a kitchen, which helps save money over going out to eat.

Take Your Vacation in the Offseason

Consider the time of year you’re planning your vacation. You can usually get better deals on everything from car rentals to hotels if you don’t go during the peak tourist season for that particular area. Plus, fewer crowds mean shorter lines and more opportunities to see and do things you might not have had the chance to do otherwise.

Figure out what deals are available for the vacation you want to take. The savings opportunities will be different if you are going for a local road trip, or on an international getaway. Either way, there are always opportunities to save here and there so that you get the most out of your vacation, while making it easier on your wallet.
