How To Create A Cozy Living Space

August 28, 2023 by Pam Maynard

The warmer months don’t last too long, which is why by early fall, it is a good idea to start looking at what can make your home as cozy as possible. Coziness is something that almost everyone needs at some point. It is so lovely and comforting to come home at the end of a long day into a cozy living space that feels like a warm hug.

So, how can you create a cozy living space?

Colors

Painting your house is one way of transforming its appearance without digging too deep into the pocket. If the house is painted with colors that no longer feel warm and cozy, it’s easy to change that by repainting the walls to the colors of your preference.

The colors you use in your spaces will have a huge impact on how comfortable and relaxed you feel there. A bolder palette is often used for creative spaces, areas in the home where you want to feel energetic and uplifting. When it comes to cozy, though, there is nothing as enveloping and relaxing as deep plums, mustard yellows, and neutrals like stone, gray, and other softer shades.

Even burned oranges can give a warm and cozy feel.

Underfoot

For those who have hard floors like stone or wood, adding a rug can change a lot about the room. Not only that, though, but rugs can help you to keep the heat in – which means you will get even more benefit from your energy usage. For those who aren’t into redecorating and changing things with the season, it can be a good idea to get carpet installed because this is one of the best ways to make a room feel as cozy as possible.

Textures

What do you think about when you think of places that give you comfort, are relaxing, and soft? Usually, we think of fabrics like chenille, brushed cotton, faux furs and even soft leather.

Using a mix of textured fabrics in colors that complete your base palette can change how relaxing a room is. For example, if you have neutral walls and carpet, go for deeper colors in textures, and if you have darker walls and carpets, try softer, more neutral pillows and blankets.

Lighting

During the Autumn and Winter months, and even during early spring, the natural light isn’t usually enough to make a room feel lit up. Instead, using a range of different artificial lighting works wonders. Table lamps are great for adding smaller lit-up areas, which up lighters and floor lamps can give a warm glow through the room.

While natural light shade lamps are great, warmer tones work better for creating a relaxing atmosphere.

Fragrances

Scents that are thought to be relaxing are lavenders, but you can swap out the florals and opt for something warmer. Things like warming spices, cinnamon and apples. Candles that smell of baked goods are usually great, too – but look for scents that make you feel homely.

For those who don’t enjoy lavender, Jasmine is used to helping with sleep and stress reduction and creating a cozy atmosphere.

Even if you’re not a homebody, everyone wants to come home to a space that can help them relax and unwind. Perhaps you are on a mission to make your whole home cozy while keeping it lux too: How to Make Your Home Cozy and Luxurious.
