Why Health Is About Putting Your Own Needs First

July 14, 2023 by Pam Maynard

No one reading this would likely accept that selfishness is a virtue. However, you’d probably also agree that there’s a big difference between selfishness and realizing that self-denial is hardly a healthy path forward, either. You probably never thing about putting your own needs first.

For many people, this may be an understood reality but not something they really practice. If you run a family, keep up with a career, try to raise your children well, or even care for someone, then odds are you’re used to coming second.

This is not always a bad thing. Most parents would agree that their children come first, and that might mean suffering a lack of sleep or putting in a herculean effort each day to get them to school on time.

Sometimes, however, you can only help others if you help yourself, too. This way, you can help other people more readily, thanks to your needs being balanced and taken care of. That may mean defending your right to self-care from time to time or using services to help you like the odd spa massage to alleviate your stress.

In this post, we’ll determine where to draw that dividing line and how to impress that on your general lifestyle. We hope it helps you put your own needs first:

Setting Boundaries Where You Need Them

Sometimes, the best thing you can learn is how to say “no.” That doesn’t mean you have to dismiss others or be unreasonable and coarse, but it can mean that you value your time enough to know which priorities are worth sacrificing other considerations for.

For example, working out boundaries with your partner, such as when you need time at home to work in your home office while sharing the childcare duties, you can do that and understand asking for help or managing your schedule (a fundamental necessity for self-care), is never asking too much.

Finding Responsible Respite

It’s good to step back and find respite where it’s possible. It may be that you have a number of health conditions that could be assisted with a medical marijuana card, helping you overcome the pharmaceutical drugs that aren’t helpful to you. This could assist you in sleeping more comfortably at night and assisting with your anxiety.

Leveraging Me-Time

Leveraging me-time is important. You might not have much of it, but it’s important that you have some time to spare for your own projects and hobbies. That might just be having thirty minutes to read in bed each night, taking a long luxurious bath on a Saturday, or enjoying a calm walk in the park with your dog three mornings a week.

Putting Your Own Needs First

Leveraging free time is about personal care and giving you time to collect your thoughts, as opposed to being on the go at all times with zero downtime. This is an essential marker of health, even if you have to squeeze some time out of your schedule to achieve it.

With this advice, you’re sure to see how good personal health care is about putting your own needs first.
