Post-Renovation Cleaning: An Essential Guide

June 21, 2023 by Pam Maynard

A renovation project can be exciting for any homeowner but often leaves clutter behind, depending on the scale. Once the construction concludes, expect debris, dust, and leftover materials almost everywhere you look. Now, it’s the right time to think about post-renovation cleaning.

Proper cleaning after a major home renovation project is crucial. Doing so ensures it’s free of clutter and any undesirable debris, transforming it into a new space with a few modifications to the functionality or aesthetics.

Regardless of the project scale you have in mind, a construction project involves hazardous and unsightly clutter. If you want to ensure the safety of your property and are ready to be restored to its original state, a construction cleanup service is a worthwhile investment. It’s also a practical choice if your renovation project is extensive or if any family members have respiratory issues that could be exacerbated by dust.

If you want to ensure post-renovation cleaning is on the right track, here are the key steps to remember.

A worker vacuums a room after repairing the floors.

  • Do A Final Inspection With The Contractor

Even before you start cleaning your home, it’s best to do a final walkthrough with your contractor before they leave in case you find any outstanding issues or repairs that require immediate attention. It should be carried out during minimal traffic so that workers who still have tasks will not be hindered.

  • Clear Out The Space

The initial step in starting the post-renovation cleaning process is to clear out the space. If several rooms in your home are part of the renovation, it’s best to start with one room at a time while noting down all your possessions. Doing so provides you with enough room to move around. It also makes it manageable to clean any hard-to-reach spots and move furniture, decor, or other items from the room.

  • Utilize Proper Protection

Regardless of the scale of your project, exposure to dust and an array of particles from different materials is likely. With this in mind, ensure you protect yourself with the right gear. Invest in a good-quality mask, gloves, and protective goggles.

  • Provide Proper Ventilation

Open the doors and windows in the parts of your home covered by the renovation project. Good ventilation in the area helps drive out any lingering odor or dust. You can also turn on fans to improve air circulation in space. Opening the windows and doors will allow fresh air to circulate and drive out the dust. Any odor from the household cleaners and detergents during the cleaning will disperse more easily.

  • Gather The Necessary Cleaning Supplies

The ideal way to make post-renovation cleaning efficient is to gather all the cleaning supplies. Generally, the basics include a broom, dustpan, mop, vacuum, rags, gloves, and cleaning solution.

Make sure you choose an effective cleaning solution to sanitize your home efficiently and work best with the flooring you have, whether it’s hardwood, carpet, tiles, or stone. If you want the ideal cleaning solution, looking for a hospital-grade sanitizer capable of eliminating bacteria and viruses may be best.

  • Remove Any Large-Sized Debris First

If large debris is present, make it a priority to remove them first. In most cases, it might include wood or drywall scraps. Doing this makes it convenient to see any leftover dirt or dust. Other large items you need to tackle first include furniture, appliances, and carpet, to name a few. Focus on these first before proceeding with smaller items.

  • Vacuum The Space

Dust can easily embed into every space, especially carpet, furniture, and curtains. Sadly, if left to accumulate, it can increase your cleaning workload. Make it a priority to vacuum everything meticulously, especially the corners of your house. The reason for this is that these spaces are often overlooked.

Take your time while vacuuming, paying close attention to the material or surface you’re working on, as different surfaces may require varying suction strengths.

  • Wipe Down Everything Thoroughly

After you complete the vacuuming task, proceed to dry dusting. It works well in dealing with any lingering dust. Remember that dust from the renovation project can gather on surfaces or cracks, creating a potentially hazardous environment. Make sure to wipe clean all surfaces to ensure the dust is gone.

Dealing with dust and potential allergens is crucial. Eliminating any airborne particles is important due to their potential to trigger allergies and cause harm to overall health.

  • Clean The Air Vents And Filters

After a renovation project, expect the air inside your home to be contaminated by dust and chemicals. Sadly, it can be a safety concern among those with respiratory conditions. Ensure the air vents and filters are thoroughly cleaned.

Final Thoughts

A thorough cleaning job after a renovation project is important to ensure a safe, clean, and comfortable living space. You can effectively clean your home with the proper preparations, observing safety precautions, and utilizing the right cleaning products and techniques. If your renovation project is extensive, you can hire a professional to tackle the task. What matters the most is ensuring your home is free of clutter, dust, and debris to make it a safe living space.
