Cooling Your Home While Minimizing AC Use This Summer

May 12, 2023 by Pam Maynard

It’s easy to see why air conditioning is the home cooling aid of choice for so many households. However, in addition to massively contributing to your family’s carbon footprint, around-the-clock AC usage can result in sizable utility costs throughout the summer months. While it’s true that dependable AC can be a necessity during periods of intense heat, there are a variety of cost-effective alternatives for cooling your home other than cranking the air conditioning 24/7.

Invest in Good Fans

In your quest to minimize AC use, high-quality ceiling fans can be your greatest asset. Installing dependable fans in every area of your home can help ensure the even distribution of cool air throughout the residence, thereby taking some of the burdens off your air conditioning system.

Furthermore, finding fans that are uniquely suited to your home and your family’s cooling needs shouldn’t prove difficult. For instance, if a fan that doubles as a light source is what you’re after, a good chandelier ceiling fan should be right up your alley.

Sleep Closer to the Ground

Since heat rises, sleeping closer to the ground can be a great way to stay cool and ensure your overnight comfort throughout the summer months. So, if you have a bed frame with adjustable height, summer is the perfect season for lowering it as much as possible.

Alternatively, if your bed frame’s height can’t be altered, consider placing your mattress on the floor during periods of hot weather. You may also want to think about investing in a good sleeping bag or Japanese-style futon.

It’s also a good idea to invest in sheets and comforters that are designed specifically for warm weather. Bedding made from breathable linen and cotton is ideal for the summer months, whereas you’ll want to avoid bedding made from heavier fabrics during this time.

Using the same bedding year-round may seem convenient, but sheets and comforters made for cold weather are liable to make you uncomfortably warm during the summer.

Wait Until Nighttime to Use Certain Appliances

Some appliances give off a fair amount of heat, which can increase the temps in the surrounding areas. For example, the heat generated by your dryer can contribute to uncomfortably warm indoor temperatures in your home.

So, if you’re not keen on the idea of hanging your laundry up to dry, at least wait until the sun goes down to use the dryer.

The same is true in the case of ovens. If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen and genuinely enjoy meal prep, the very thought of putting the brakes on oven use may fill you with dread.

However, if you’re adventurous enough to experiment with new dishes, you’ll be pleased to learn that oven-free summertime recipes are far from limited. Furthermore, if you’re interested in outdoor grilling, limited oven use can serve as the perfect excuse to hone your BBQ skills.

Cover Your Windows

Excessive sunlight can contribute to uncomfortable indoor temps throughout the summer. That being the case, it’s in your best interest to limit how much sunlight is able to enter your home during the sun’s peak hours. This can be accomplished with the aid of blackout drapes and/or blackout screens.

As the name suggests, blackout drapes are designed with light blockage in mind – which is why they’re created with much thicker materials than traditional drapery. Additionally, with the summer sun rising at some truly uncomfortable hours, installing blackout drapes in your sleeping space can help ensure peaceful slumber throughout the summertime.

While blackout screens tend to cost a bit less than blackout curtains, the level of light blockage they provide generally isn’t as high. Furthermore, they often wear out much quicker – especially the paper variety. Still, if replacing your current drapes simply isn’t an option, screens are a cost-effective alternative.

For some of us, the very thought of effectively cooling a home without air conditioning would seem absurd. And frankly, it’s easy to see why so many people embrace this mindset. Air conditioning is convenient, and its effects can be instantly felt.

However, while abandoning AC outright may not be feasible, minimizing your reliance on it should be well within your abilities. So, if you and your family are interested in staying cool without stretching your finances this summer, the advice outlined above is likely to prove useful.
