How Often Do I Need Septic Tank Cleaning?

April 3, 2023 by Pam Maynard

For those who live in rural areas or locations without city water and sewer services, a septic tank is usually a part of the waste removal system. A septic tank is specially designed to handle the collection of waste and sewage from homes and businesses, but it will occasionally need to be cleaned and emptied by a professional septic tank pumping and cleaning service.

Cleaning vs. Pumping

The first thing to know is that cleaning and pumping are two different services in the septic world. Pumping is done regularly, while a full cleaning is often done less frequently, but is still important.

Pumping involves a truck coming out to your property and connecting its hose system to your septic tank. Then, they extract all of the waste into the truck and take it for disposal.

They may or may not also clean the septic tank when it is pumped. You should have your tank fully cleaned once every three to five years to remove debris and build-up and ensure that the system is in its best condition and working to the best of its ability.

While cleaning is a service that should be done periodically for all septic tanks, pumping is something that will be on a different schedule for different people. That’s because the size of your tank and how many people are in your household will dictate how often the tank gets filled and needs to be pumped and emptied.

Scheduling professional septic pumping services can ensure that your tank is properly maintained and functioning efficiently. Regular maintenance by experts helps prevent costly repairs and extends the lifespan of your septic system.

Partner with Local Professionals

The best thing you can do is build a relationship with a septic tank-specific plumbing service that can help you with everything related to your septic system. Then, they’ll be on call and ready to help whenever you need assistance. They can even advise you of septic tank cleaning schedules or suggested maintenance and let you know if certain parts need attention or repairs need to be made.

This can ensure that your septic system lasts as long as possible, which can save you a fortune on a replacement. Keep your septic tank clean and pumped regularly for the best lifespan.
