Why Obesity is a Threat to Your Health

January 10, 2023 by Pam Maynard

Do you know that obesity reduces almost all aspects of human health? Yes, it harms your mood, memory, respiration, and reproductive system.

Excess weight raises the risk of a variety of deadly and debilitating diseases. It happens through various channels and directly as a result of the stress of carrying around the extra pounds. Some are due to complex changes in metabolism and hormones.

Top Health Risks Linked with Being Overweight

Being obese comes with several health risks. Here are a few of them.

Kidney disease

For the kidneys to have the disease, it means they are damaged. They are no longer capable of filtering blood well. That’s because obesity itself fastens the process.

Because excessive weight also increases the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes, the kidneys are likely to suffer. Some people don’t have high blood pressure or diabetes but have kidney disease.

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is also linked to obesity. In OSA (obstructive sleep apnea), the airway is narrowed during sleep. Also, understand that having a higher BMI poses a risk factor for this sleeping disorder. Yes,  more than 45% of people with obesity also have obstructive sleep apnea.

With sleep apnea, a person finds it difficult to breathe at night. This also makes you snore heavily during sleep. It may likewise cause daytime sleepiness. This is not good for the heart. That weight loss always reduces sleep apnea.

Your Health at Risk

Cancer

Obesity may also cause some cancers. A few studies confirmed this for cancers of the endometrium, breast after menopause, colon, esophagus, and kidney. They linked them to obesity.

Also, more studies have associated obesity with cancers of the pancreas, ovaries, and gallbladder. More than 650,000 cancer cases in the United States are linked to obesity annually. The higher your BMI (body mass index), the higher your cancer risk.

Stroke

This is a severe health condition whereby the blood supply in the brain suddenly cuts off. This is often a result of a burst or blockage in a blood vessel connected to the neck or brain.

A stroke can therefore cause severe damage to the brain tissue. This makes its victims unable to move some parts of their bodies or even be able to speak. The leading cause of this health condition is high blood pressure, which is also linked to obesity.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure is also referred to as “hypertension.” It is a health condition where the blood passes through the blood vessels with more force than usual.

This health issue may also strain the heart and cause severe damage to the blood vessels. Hypertension is also linked with obesity. Losing a reasonable amount of weight helps patients lower their blood pressure.
