Pets and Open Backyards: A Guide to Keeping Your furry Friends Safe

October 19, 2022 by Pam Maynard

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an estimated 64% of American households have at least one pet. That’s a lot of furry friends! So if you have an open backyard, it’s essential to take steps to keep your pets safe.

But before you open up your gates and unleash your dog or cat, there are a few things you should know about keeping them safe in an open yard.

1) Fence Off Your Yard:

If you have an open backyard, the first step is to fence it off. This will help keep your pet contained and prevent them from wandering off. There are a variety of fencing options available, so choose one that’s right for your pet.

For example, if you have a small dog or cat, a picket fence may be sufficient. For larger dogs, you’ll need a sturdier fence, such as chain link or wood.

If you’re not interested in building a fence, there are other options available. One is to use a wireless dog fence. These systems work by sending a radio signal around the perimeter of your property.

When your dog approaches the boundary, it’ll receive a warning signal. If they continue, they’ll receive a mild shock. The shock is not harmful, but it will get their attention and deter them from leaving the property.

2) Keep an Eye on Your Pet:

It’s important to keep an eye on your pet when they’re in the backyard. They could wander outside the boundary of your property and escape or someone could snatch them.

If you can’t be outside with your pet, consider investing in a pet camera. These cameras allow you to watch your pet from your smartphone or computer. Some even come with two-way audio, so you can talk to your pet while you’re away.

3) Provide Shade and Water:

When it’s hot out, it’s essential to provide your pet with shade and water. Pets can get sunburned, just like humans, so make sure there’s a shady spot for them to relax in.

And always have fresh water available. A pet fountain is a great way to keep your pets hydrated, and they’ll love the moving water.

4) Be Careful with Chemicals:

If you use chemicals, such as herbicides or pesticides, be careful not to expose your pet to them. These substances can be toxic if ingested, so it’s essential to keep them out of reach.

If you’re using them in your backyard, make sure your pet is inside or in a different area of the property until the chemicals have dried.

5) Keep an Eye Out for Wildlife:

In some areas, wildlife can pose a threat to pets. If you live in an area with coyotes, for example, you’ll need to take extra precautions. Coyotes have been known to attack and kill small dogs and cats.

So if you have a coyote problem in your area, make sure your pet is always supervised when they’re outside.

6) Keep your Backyard Clean:

Pets can attract fleas, ticks, and other pests. To keep your backyard free of these critters, it’s important to keep it clean. Pick up your pet’s waste regularly, and rake up any leaves or debris.

It would help if you also trimmed back any bushes or trees as these are all potential hiding spots for pests.

7) Check for Hazards:

Before letting your pet out into the backyard, take a walk around and look for any potential hazards. Remove anything that could injure your pet, such as sharp objects or broken glass.

You should also check for holes in the ground and fill them in. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye out for poisonous plants. If you’re not sure which plants are safe, check with your veterinarian.

8) Get to Know your Neighbors:

If you have neighbors with pets, it’s a good idea to get to know them. This way, you can keep an eye on each other’s pets and make sure they’re safe. It’s also an excellent way to find out about any potential hazards in the area, such as aggressive dogs.

In conclusion, there are a number of things you can do to keep your pet safe in your backyard. By taking some simple precautions, you can rest assured that your furry friend will be able to enjoy the outdoors without any problems.
