Keeping the Kids Safe in Public

October 6, 2022 by Pam Maynard

No matter the weather outside, if you are heading out with your children you need to ensure that they are safe. Children need to be looked after when you are out in public with them.

The summertime always brings picnics and parks and public amusement parks, and the winter months bring Bonfire nights and fireworks shows and Christmas treats.

In all of these situations, children are excited to get going and to see their favorite characters, and you need to make sure that you know how to keep your kids safe in public.

It’s so much more than just handholding – you have to consider the fact that children can be hurt even when it comes to run excitedly across the park.

You may not always need a child injury lawyer when it comes to your children being hurt in public, but it’s good to know one just in case. Here are five tips to keep your kids safe in public.

Take a picture.

Before you head out with your children, take a picture of what they look like and have it ready on your phone. Of course, most people do this with the idea that the children are cute so they like to show their grandparents.

However when you are going out with your children, having a picture on your phone of what they were wearing and what they look like in that moment will help you just in case they get lost.

Buy wristbands.

You can buy rubber wristbands and have your cell phone number printed on them. When you are in public, your children can wear these wristbands and if they get lost they basically have a way for somebody to contact you if they are found.

It’s a great idea if your children don’t know your phone number by heart.

Teach your children stranger danger.

When you’re at the zoo or at the park or any busy place really, children should learn where to stay and where to wait if they get lost. Teaching them to stay put where they are is easier for them because then you can retrace your steps and find them again.

Let them know which kind of grown-ups are okay to talk to, such as teachers, police officers, anybody with a security uniform and even retail staff. If your child has lost you and started to worry, knowing that they can speak to a safe grown-up will help.

Practice.

Before you go somewhere busy, practice the stop and go game at home. This is where you stand at the designated spot and you tell the kids to go – and they will run forward or run around the room. When you yell stop, they have to stop exactly where they are now moving no breathing just wait – like musical statues.

When they play the stop and go game, they can learn to stay still when you yell stop in case they run too far ahead.
