How to Prepare Your Pets for the Winter

September 28, 2022 by Pam Maynard

Preparing your home for winter can be exciting, with various activities such as pulling at all your warm clothing and cozy blankets. However, in your preparations, it’s essential to put plans in place for your pets, as the temperature from the cold weather can significantly affect them.

According to statistics, animal companions could even die in extreme cold, making it crucial to consider your animal companion in your winter plans. Cold temperatures that rise due to winter can also cause itchiness and flaking skin on your pet.

Here are some practical tips to help you prepare your pets for the winter.

Bath your pets less frequently

Bathing your pets too often can cause the removal of protective oils from their skins. As a result, their skin can become dry, causing discomfort. You should also not shave your pet down to the skin, particularly dogs. It’s better to only trim the hair first to prevent it from getting locked.

Provide warm shelter

If your pet is not hairy enough, you must look for alternative ways to keep it extra warm. For instance, if you have a dog, you can get a warm sweater with coverage from the neck to the tail or a dog snoodie to cover its head and make it feel warm.

Always choose coats and sweaters that make them move easily without any restrictions. Also, note that it’s not advisable to keep your pets roaming outside in winter. Your pets may love to roam and walk around, but try to keep them inside when you see weather changes.

Protect their paws

After taking a stroll with your pet, try to wash their feet and keep them dry. Look for cracks or redness in their paws and attend to them as soon as possible. You must use pet-friendly ice-melted products to protect your pet’s sensitive paws. You can also get them some dog boots to provide warmth during winter.

Brush out fluffy coats of fur

If your pet is fully coated, brush it out regularly. In the winter, your pet’s unbrushed hair might trap snow or moisture; thus, you must brush it out often to prevent irritation or discomfort. Check out the variety of pet brushes available in pet shops and get the right one for your pet.

Limit outdoor time in winter

Perhaps you often spend quality time with your pets outside during specific seasons. However, spending several hours with them outside during winter is not advisable, as even the furriest pet can get cold. Even though you can take them out for walks, it’s advisable to return indoors when the temperature drops.

How to Prepare Your Pets for the Winter

Also, if your pet is often outside the yard by himself, check often to see if it’s not showing signs of feeling cold.

With these tips in mind, preparing your pet for the winter can be much easier and more organized. You only need to understand your pets’ wants while you keep them comfortable in all seasons.
