Worried About a Relative in a Nursing Home? Here Are 5 Important Steps to Take

August 17, 2022 by Pam Maynard

Most people will have to send their elderly relatives to a nursing home when it becomes too challenging to take care of them or for the relatives to take care of themselves. Taking your elderly loved one to a nursing home does not mean they will automatically be treated well.

You need to ensure they receive the care they need at the facility. There have been too many cases of abuse at nursing homes for you not to care. The following are vital steps you should take if you are worried about a relative in a nursing home:

Medical Check Up

Most nursing home residents have medical issues, which is why people send relatives there. Nursing homes are more likely to provide better medical care than you can provide at home.

If you are worried about an elderly relative’s health, you should take them to a hospital for a medical check-up. It is always a good idea to get a second opinion.

A medical check-up will reveal if your relative is not in good health or if they have been abused. For example, a relative with dementia may be unable to tell you if they have a broken bone. The check-up will reveal enough for you to take action.

Consider Getting Legal Advice from a Nursing Home Lawyer

If you think your relative has been mistreated at the nursing home and a medical check-up proves it, the next step should be to get legal advice from a nursing home lawyer. The lawyer will evaluate the situation and tell if you have any legal grounds for action against the nursing home.

A nursing home lawyer has the necessary experience to judge such cases and determine the worthiness of your case. Though you may have evidence of abuse and neglect by the nursing home towards your senior relative, you may not have the grounds for legal action. A lawyer will help you determine how to hold the nursing home accountable for its actions.

Visit The Nursing Home

A crucial step you should take if you are worried about a relative in a nursing home is to visit the facility. You should often be visiting, which is why one of the most important questions to ask when choosing a nursing home is about their visitation policies.

A visit to the facility can reveal what is wrong with a nursing home unless they do an excellent job of hiding it. Walk around and see how the staff is treating other residents. Ask your relative about the food quality and maintenance of the facility. Multiple visits are necessary to discover any negative issues.

Report The Nursing Home

Another vital step you should take if you suspect a nursing home of lousy behavior that negatively affects your elderly relative is to report them to the relevant authorities. All nursing homes have to get a license from the state for them to run.

The state licensing board is responsible for monitoring the activities of nursing homes and punishing poor activity. They are better suited to investigate the nursing home than you can. You should also report them to the appropriate regulatory board for further investigation.

Worried About a Relative in a Nursing Home?

Take Legal Action

Once you are sure of malevolent behavior by the nursing home, you should sue them for damages. You can receive compensation for wrongdoing done to a loved one in a nursing home.

Legal action may take some time to achieve results, and a lawyer will be valuable in helping you bring the nursing home to justice.

You hope for the best when you take a loved one to a nursing home, but the results may be harmful. If you are worried about a relative in a nursing home, you should take the steps above as they give you the best chance of getting justice. If something is wrong, do everything in your power to hold the nursing home accountable.
