7 Ways to Reduce Your Monthly Expenses as a Single Mom

July 26, 2022 by Pam Maynard

Single parenthood comes with a unique set of demands that can sometimes prove overwhelming, especially for single moms. Besides the emotional turmoil, fatigue, anxieties, and stresses that come with solo parenting, any single mom can feel financially overburdened at some point in life.

But it gets a little easier if you’re good at managing your finances, a big part of which entails making savings from your spending each month. Before getting into the tips, a piece of advice is to use Latest Deals to do your online shopping and in-stores. On their website, you can find deals ranging from food to toys, and everything you can imagine in between. You will definitely find what you are looking for at a discounted price there.

Managing Your Finances

Beyond any reasonable doubt, it’s not a cheap walk in the park raising kids as a single parent. At the end of the day, your kids will expect groceries on the table, clothing in their wardrobes, and their school fees to be paid. They’ll also want stuff to keep them entertained and as happy as their age mates.

This is not to forget that at the end of every month, you will have bills like rent (or mortgage), utilities, transportation, house supplies, insurance, debt repayment, and probably an endless list of more rudely staring at your purse.

These monthly expenses could be enough to put you into a financial mess if you’re not careful at how you manage your finances.

7 Ways Single Moms Can Reduce Their Monthly Expenses

1. Create a Strict Budget – And Stick To It!

If you’re one of the single moms who excel at budgeting, kudos! A strict monthly budget means prioritizing just the most important expenses for you and your kids. These may include things like housing, school, clothing, and groceries.

2. Downsize or Move to a Cheaper House

If you’re constantly falling behind on rent payments because you haven’t earned enough, it might be time to think about moving to a cheaper house that you can afford.

Alternatively, you can even consider downsizing to reduce your living costs and live a simpler life. Both options can go a long way in slashing out a portion of monthly expenses from your single mom’s budget.

3. Think About Switching Your Utility Company

From water to gas and electricity, different utility companies have different pricing rates and packages. If you care to look around, you may land on a utility company that offers cheaper rates and better deals compared to the one you’re subscribed to. Saving even as little as 50 bucks from monthly utilities can have a significant impact on the finances of any single mom.

4. Take Care of Your Health and Wellness:

Especially if you’re taking care of more than one kid, being a single mom can be mentally, emotionally, and physically draining. All this can put a toll on your overall health and well-being, and in some way even affect your finances.

But if you prioritize taking care of yourself, it’s easier to put some bucks aside for a rainy day or other important needs in life for you and your kids.

A few ways you can take care of yourself include:

  • Find a support group if you need one
  • Do not dwell in the past – it will only cause further agony
  • Create a realistic exercise routine
  • Eat a healthy diet

5. Shop Around for the Best Value Life Insurance

Insurance is a crucial aspect of life, whether you’re a couple or raising your children single-handedly. Life insurance, specifically, is a good way to cater to your children’s future expenses in the unfortunate event that you pass away.

And since not all policies are equal, it’s essential to calculate how much life insurance you need as a single parent before getting coverage. By shopping around and getting the best value life insurance, you will have reduced your monthly spending now and in the future when you’re gone.

6. Buy Groceries in Bulk

It’s often cheaper to buy groceries in bulk, especially in the market or directly from the farm. Moreover, some grocery stores offer discounts on bulk purchases. After all, isn’t food among the most expensive yet important monthly expenses – perhaps next to housing?

7. Determine Whether to Seek Child Support

If you are a single mom who has custody of your child(ren), this is a totally different ball game.

In such a case, a court will have to decide the amount of child support you are entitled to receive, or whether or not you qualify to be their sole guardian. Nonetheless, child support could help reduce your financial strain as a single mom because some of your kids’ needs will be catered to by the father.

Being a single mom can be tough, but it shouldn’t make your life financially miserable. With the above few tips in mind, you could pretty much minimize your monthly spending and perhaps embark on your journey to financial freedom.
