Healthy Habits to Encourage in Your Home

July 18, 2022 by Pam Maynard

Taking care of your health is essential. With the spread of viruses, such as COVID-19, it’s important to practice healthy habits. They also allow you to live a happier and longer life. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Start Your Day Early

Get a jump start on the day by waking up early. You can take a minute to wake and feel refreshed. Waking up later may cause you to feel more rushed and tense. If you’re the first one up, you’ll have time to yourself away from the kids or your partner.

To wake up early, you need to get plenty of sleep and have a good bedtime routine. Turn off elections before bed and do something relaxing, like reading a book. Then wake up at the same time each day.

2. Make Your Bed in the Morning

Making your bed can inspire a feeling of accomplishment. It also sets a positive tone for the day. Then as you walk around your room, you’ll be less distracted by clutter. Making your bed may even motivate you to do other tasks you may be putting off, such as cleaning the bathroom.

Starting with your bed is a small way to dive into being productive for the day. Plus, it may even impress your guests.

3. Have a Healthy Breakfast

Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. It provides you with energy for the rest of the afternoon. Skip the sugary cereals and eat nutritious options full of protein and fiber. These ingredients help manage weight loss, increase blood-sugar labels and boost your energy.

Here are a few foods to add to your list:

  • Eggs
  • Greek yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Fruit
  • Whole Wheat Toast

4. Keep Up With Your Hygiene Routine

As a busy parent, putting your hygiene needs aside can be tempting. Sometimes after a long day of work and putting the kids to bed, you may skip the shower. Maintaining a routine is essential to remove bacteria that could cause skin rashes.

It can even make you feel more refreshed. Also, keep up with your oral hygiene and consider using mouthwash and flossing. Make sure your kids wash their hands regularly. Remind them to use clean water and scrub for at least 20 seconds. Another way to stay healthy is attending annual dentist and doctor’s checkups.

5. Get Plenty of Natural Light Exposure

Natural light plays a role in regulating your body’s circadian rhythm. This physiological process occurs approximately every 24 hours and impacts sleep patterns. Natural light can help wake you up and boost your mood. This way, you can be more productive throughout the day. The natural sunlight increases your exposure to vitamin D as well.

So, place your bed near a window. If impossible, use a device that slowly emits light to mimic the rising sun.

6. Create a Morning Exercise Routine

Getting active is vital to keeping your body healthy. Exercise can help manage weight loss, improve muscle strength and increase energy levels. Working out releases feel-good hormones that can reduce stress and anxiety.

You need at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity weekly. There are multiple ways to get moving. You can go for a walk, try some yoga or hit the gym. You can even make it a family bonding activity.

7. Don’t Work Where You Sleep

With more people, the lines between home and work can get blurred. So, try not to have your home office where you sleep. This can make it harder to turn off your brain at night and transition into bedtime mode.

Even if you don’t have an entire room for your office, you can still find creative places other than the bedroom. For example, can you convert an old closet or attic space? You could even section off a part of the kitchen and put up dividers.

8. Create a Do List

Writing a to-do list can help you remember the tasks you want to complete. That way, at the end of the day, you can feel accomplished checking items off your list. Having a to-do list holds you accountable as well.

Write this list before bed and place it somewhere easily visible. For example, stick it to the fridge or prop it on your bedside table. Encourage your children also to make lists for the day. This allows them to take responsibility for the things they need to get done.

9. Try New Things

Trying new activities is good for your mental health. Finding things you like to do can make you happier, reducing stress. Also, finding new activities can increase your confidence and expand your social circle.

So, create a bucket list of things you want to try, such as traveling to new places. Have your family make a list and display it somewhere everyone can see, like the living room mantle.

10. Spend Time With Your Loved Ones

Building relationships is essential. Having solid connections can make you happier. These allow you to have a support system and a sense of purpose. So schedule time with people that mean the most to you.

Grab food or drinks with friends after work. Also, make it a point to visit the family farther away. With today’s technology, you can video chat with relatives living in another state. Set up regular playdates with your kid’s friends from school as well.

How to Live a Healthy and Happy Life

Taking care of yourself is essential for your mental and physical health. Try setting a positive example for your kids by picking up good habits. Consider incorporating a few of these tips into your family home today.
