Couscous and Spaghetti O’s

March 28, 2013 by Pam Maynard

Do your kids turn their noses up to new foods?  Are they addicted to circle pasta that comes in a can?  Are you searching for ways to get them to eat healthier?  It’s time they try some couscous!  Couscous is a tiny pasta that comes from Morroco and is also used in Southern French cuisine. Most parents report that their kids really love it, and couscous can be fluffy and light, and totally simple to prepare.  It can be served hot with baked chicken or cold with raspberries and cool whip.  Any way they will eat couscous is better than eating Spaghetti O’s.  Have you ever seen how much sodium is in one serving of Spaghetti O’s?

Do you need some family friendly recipes for couscous?  You can find couscous recipes on besthealthmag.ca.   Find delightful recipes like One-Pot Sweet Potato Couscous that the whole family will love.  It has sweet potato, raisins, feta cheese, green beans and walnuts all mixed together with couscous.  I think my son would love this one as long as I left out the walnuts!  I think he might even eat this Couscous squash salad as long as he could pick the veggies that go in it!

Another way to get your children to eat couscous is make them into fun shapes, faces, add cheese, have a theme or even have the children come up with a name for this new “rice.”  Maybe today is the letter “C” day and  they try Chilly Cheerios, Cheesy Couscous and Curry Chicken.  Have fun with  your food.  No one says that couscous has to be eaten a certain way with certain foods.  Give you children some options so they can experiment.  They may find that they love chocolate and they love cucumbers, but the two don’t mix well. But, they may love chocolate sauce on cold couscous for a sweet treat or cucumbers with couscous for a cool salad.

Let them try Couscous- you will be surprised how easily kids will eat fun food!
