Signs Your Old HVAC System Needs An Upgrade

March 16, 2022 by Pam Maynard

If your home or business is more than 10 years old, then it’s probably time for a new HVAC system. Your old system may still be working, but it’s likely not to run as efficiently as a newer model. A new HVAC system can save you money on your energy bills and make your space more comfortable. Here are some signs that it’s time to replace your old HVAC system.

Signs Your Old HVAC System Needs An Upgrade

Strange Sounds Come From The Unit

While normal sounds of a running unit are normal, once they start to interrupt a quiet household, it’s a reason for concern. Air conditioners or furnaces that are making erratic noises often indicate some issue or malfunction. Hissing sounds usually are a reason for something to be leaking. One issue that’s related to these sounds is your unit will turn off before the set temperature you desire in your home.

You Have a Spike In Your Energy Bill

It is normal for your energy bill to change as the seasons change. For example, many people have higher bills in the summer compared to winter. However, if you compare months from year to year they shouldn’t be significantly different.

One of the reasons to install a high-efficiency HVAC system is because your old one has become too expensive to heat or cool the home. According to Energy.gov, even if you replace a unit that is ten years old, you could save between 20-40 percent off your energy bill annually.  For residential properties, you’re looking at savings of at least a few hundred dollars a year. That’s one of the reasons to install a high-efficiency HVAC system.

Parts For Older Units Are Very Expensive

Just like an old car, should you decide to replace parts to keep it running, it’s going to cost you dearly. Also, there’s no guarantee that fixing an older unit is going to keep it running for much longer. The reason is pretty simple: the equipment has to work harder, which means there’s a great chance for a breakdown.

For many homeowners, they often wonder if replacing an HVAC system is the right decision because there is an initial investment. Old furnaces or air conditioning units that are in need of constant repair will cost owners more money over the long run.

It just makes more sense to get it replaced for a newer, more energy-efficient option. Also, new systems are a good selling point for any property and you’re more likely to get the entire asking price for your home.

You’re Struggling To Keep The Home At A Set Temperature

Aging HVAC units are often the culprit that will keep your home from staying at a consistent temperature. There could be a variety of reasons for this happening, such as a clogged filter, cracking in the ducts, or even significant damage to the internal structures (i.e. motors).

Essentially, an HVAC system that is keeping your home at a set temperature is not working correctly. This situation often results in frustration for individuals, especially if they need their home to be heated or cooled at a certain temperature for health reasons.

Bad Indoor Air Quality

Poor indoor air quality can cause a variety of health problems. If you are experiencing any of the following signs, it might be time to have your HVAC system replaced: difficulty breathing, coughing, sneezing, eye irritation, and headaches. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more serious health issues down the road, such as respiratory issues, heart, diseases, and even cancer.

The average household spends $2,200 on energy costs every year. A new HVAC system can help you reduce that number by up to 50%.

  • HVAC systems have a lifespan of about 10-15 years. If your system is older than that, it’s likely time for an upgrade.
  • A new HVAC system will also increase the value of your home.
